To me, at first I thought this song was all about depression, but then I heard it some more, and it sounds a lot more like it's about heroin addiction. The first part I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real sounds like he's cutting himself so he has others things to focus on other than a dark reality. But then later The needle tears a hole The old familiar sting when he adds in the needle, it becomes more apparent that the song is about heroin addiction. What have I become My sweetest friend Everyone I know Goes away in the end This, to me, sounds like his "sweetest friend" is the high he gets, which eventually goes away. And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt The "all" is, again, the high that he is offering to a friend, but it is really just an "empire of dirt." The hurt is the needle. I wear this crown of shit Upon my liar's chair Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair His "crown" is what he thinks he has, but it's just all shit. The heroin is messing with his mind and, as the song puts it, breaking his thoughts. Beneath the stains of time The feelings disappear You are someone else I am still right here The first half of this is pretty obvious, but the "someone else" is the friend I mentioned going to rehab, recovering, and later living a successful life, while the protagonist of this song is still stuck with a needle in his arm. If I could start again A million miles away I will keep myself I would find a way The ending is him wishing he could start over in a secluded place by himself, without any influences, and living a stable life. So, that's what I think about this. I don't really think this is particularly about Reznor, but it maybe a little influenced by his personal life. I think this is more just about a nameless protagonist and that Reznor was trying to tell a story with his music. |
