In the heat I saw you rising from the dirt Drunken tears and tugging at your skirt If only you could tell me then what part of you got hurt In the heat I saw you rising from the dirt First, the second line should read: "Drunk, in tears and tugging at your skirt." These are some of the best four lines ever written about a modern day damsel in distress. Great song. |

From an interview: "Mine and my wife's [childhood] were on my mind, we had similar early years, because her mom was real young and mine was too. They both did a great job and we're still really close to both of them, but the older that we get, the more we realize that it couldn't have been easy for them at that point." http://tinyurl.com/cofc072717 |

A few thoughts: "But I knew she planned to sleep alone" Andy and the girl are friends ... never lovers. Perhaps childhood friends who never crossed the line. He is there for her in her hour of need; as they struggle to retain any sense of normalcy (ignore the elephant) "And bitch about the weekend crowd" They live in a touristy area -- maybe a beach town. Anyone who has lived in such a place knows that this is a favorite pastime of the locals. "given up my place in line" He is affected by her death - he replays it all regularly. In doing so he has sort of dropped out of the life he knew before. Whatever his pursuits were have been cast to the wayside -- he has given up his place in line -- as he comes to terms with his own mortality. Brilliant song -- hits like a punch in the gut. Then you come back for more. |
