I love this song...it's a perfect example of Jim Steinman's ability to infuse even a serious song with wordplay (something seriously rare these days). To elaborate: the title phrase "left in the dark" both refers to the lyric "turn off the lights" (literally leaving the protagonist in darkness) and the idiomatic/figurative "to leave someone in the dark about something" (to conceal information). Not a very subtle or complex pun (at least in my opinion), but clever nonetheless. |
