The Civil Wars – Falling Lyrics 11 years ago
I feel like this song is less about a relationship falling apart and more about someone fighting the struggle with depression.
It's a slow, sinking sort of thing that doesn't happen over night.

Those that are struggling with this kind of depression realize that they can't make themselves happy anymore, and thus try to help everyone else, and further sinking into their depression. Though the people suffering from depression are still fighting, wanting to get out of it, but stuck like quicksand. They just need a little bit of help pulling out of it.
Sometimes, though, it is unfortunate that the partner they once felt love for they can no longer feel those feelings of affection. They cannot feel it now, nor cannot remember the feeling anymore because of the depression. They realize what is happening, but cannot stop it, no matter how hard they try.
Also, depending on the partner, it is not uncommon for the depressed one to hear "Cheer up" or "you were once happy" or "you will be happy again" (Like the line "Tell me it's nothing
Try to convince me that I'm not drowning
Oh
Let me tell you I am")
These are strange and foreign concepts to someone in the fight. It makes them feel guilty for having depression - they feel they should be happy when they aren't.
It also seems to me like she is wanting to save him the pain from her suffering and wanting to let him go so as not to hurt him further with trying to have him help her through something she has no idea how to fight herself.
