I think this song is about a couple that has been together for a long time, in which one of them wants to get married, and the other one agrees without really wanting it deep inside, or feeling deeply insecure about his/her feelings, but agrees due to the safeness, comfort, certainty and fear of hurting the other person. Happens a lot. A beautiful sad song |

Considering Ray Davies record as a lyricist, this song is likely to be ironic, satirising about "rockstar like problems" regarding: 1- alcoholism (the beer, the gin) 2- alienation ("But I felt so down"; "And just when I wanted no one to be there") 3- ego detached from reality (Talking about your drunk thoughts to the audience; the paranoia about what "the others" might think of you) 4- nostalgia from the days before fame (the old cafe from happier days) All those, problems very far from the ones of the working class, regular folk, and normal englishness that Ray Davies was fond of. |

Although the LSD interpretation could be likely a meaning (could be meant to be ambiguous), I think that the song has to do with something about growing, and to do it with the conscience of being part of a new generation with a complete different mindset from the previous one (like parents, or as this song says, like "teachers"), and with the feeling of freedom and change that was iconic from that generation during the 60's. In any case, is my favourite Byrds song. Maybe also their most "english" song (thee baroque style organ sounds a bit like The Kinks). |
