In my opinion, as with many others, apparently, it's a love song. It's the kind of love where you would do anything just to be with this person, just to be near them. You would break any and every rule for them and if you don't make it in to heaven for your sins, tough. It doesn't matter.
I read a few comments, and honestly the idea of being gay as a sin didn't even cross my mind. Not to be insulting to other people's beliefs, but that is just stupid. There is no reason God would persecute anyone for the way they are. However, taking into account that people out there do believe that, I'm hearing the song somewhat differently. Now I can't help but hear that in there too. |

I think it's about her past in general, not just her father or just the cutting. Of course, the cutting makes an appearance. "All the pain and the truth. I wear like a battle wound," is the major one. She wears the scars of her past, but not in shame. She's proud that she's been able to over-come so much, and they could now be a reminder of all she is capable of, and her own strength. The person mentioned in here, "You can never hurt me again," could be her father. In fact, I think it kind of is. But I really think the 'you' is her past, and it can't hurt her ever again because she is moving on to the future. She may always have the past with her, but she won't let it hurt her. |

In my opinion, this is about a relationship. I think the backstory for this particular person is they had the girl of their dreams, but they screwed it up. They took that person for granted and didn't treat him/her like king/queen they are. They weren't one hundred percent invested in the relationship and, when it came down to it, weren't ready to give a real commitment. Once the person figured this out, they dumped them. Now, once they're alone, they realize what they had. They never realized they really loved them until it was too late, and now they are filled with regret. (Never know you love her till you let her go). However, no matter how much it hurts, they let go. So that person can move on and find someone who realizes how amazing they are and treat them accordingly, but also because they can't live in the past and even though it seems like the world is ending, they have to move on. |

I think this song is about a relationship where one person has been trying so hard because they are so in love, but they just can't make it. There's a wall between them and they feel the other person isn't really trying and they can't do it anymore. (Sorry I couldn't get to you). It's hard to do because they love this person with all their heart, but they're exhausted from doing everything and getting nothing in return. Even though it hurts, they have to walk away. And now they're wondering if the other person even cares, if he/she ever really loved them. They're saying Say Something because they have to leave but feels like the other person hasn't even noticed. It hurts that after all that effort, after finally giving up (I'm giving up on you), that person doesn't give a damn, and the silence is killing them. |
