I feel like this has something to do with heritage: learning from those who came before; realising that what we are and what we think is, wether we like it or not, a construction influenced by other people and events - that is what I get from "The blood that flows through me is not my own, The blood is from the past, not my own". You can take other peoples experience and wisdom and learn from it. Some Neurosis songs make me thing about my grandfather, and I can relate this one to that, his advice, his life experience, and although he is gone those things "flow through me" keeping his memory alive and making me a more complete human being - "The blood is my strength, I'm not alone". It does not have to be family related, I guess anything you can relate to and find strength and "wisdom" on. History, Experience, Culture, Family/Friend ties. |

I feel like this is about accepting death - since it is inevitable - and how small we all are after all. Death define us and unite us as human beings. I don't see this as a, necessarily, negative song, though. This record and Scott Kelly's solo stuff really helped me overcome/accept my grandfather's kind of sudden death, even-though I fail to understand most of his lyrics. |
