| Patrick Watson – Big Bird In A Small Cage Lyrics | 8 years ago |

I tkink the song is about captivity, and the ones who live in the captivity are not the birds- they are actual real people. They are hidden in "a house half way round the world" and no one knows about this place. They are being held against their will. Their freedom and their free will have been taken away- they are being made to do the things other people enjoy. That is why they are so sad and mourning doing it. The ones who made them do those things are "the midnight boys with their black suits" and just showing up is enough for "the birds" to start "singing their songs", no waiting. They know exactly what they're supposed to do and when to do it, and that is why I don't believe it's about the birds at all. "You put a big bird in a small cage and he'll sing you a song"- you lock someone up so they can't move, and they will have to do what you tell them to do. |

Wait- Be patient, wait for the moment you meet your lost one again, but live your life. Send your dreams where nobody hides- Free yourself from hiding in pain, move on and start living your dreams. Give your tears to the tide- Release yourself from sadness and stop crying. No time, no time- Time is precious, it is irreversibly passing, so don't waste it anymore grieving, and make the most of your life because it is too short. There's no end, there is no goodbye- The lost one is still out there somewhere, alive and waiting for you, and you will meet them again at the end of your earthly time. Disappear with the night- When your time is up, you will finally reunite with the loved one and will find peace and happiness. No time, no time- But until then, don't waste the rest of your time on Earth, because there's so much more to it. |

I forgot to explain the meaning of the word FLOWER in this song. When she got sick, she became like a flower- unable to do anything about it, run away from it or fight it. She’s aware she’ll never get well again, and is exactly where she is now, not going anywhere. Just standing still and powerless, waiting for the torment to finaly take the course. And not only for a moment, but for the uncertain period of time. |

| I think this totally matches with what she is singing about. | |

The latin at the beginning already proposes that the person believes in Jesus, and is religious. Give me release- She’s asking God to release her from her sick body. Witness me- She’s asking Him to judge her. I am outside- Her spirit is outside of her body, and she is stuck between life and death. Give me peace- She’s asking God to accept her, so she can be at peace. Heaven holds a sence of wonder- She wonders what it’s like in heaven. And I wanted to believe that I’d get caught up when the rage in me subsides- She believes she will go to heaven when she releases from this great pain that’s raging inside of her (when she dies). Passion chokes the flower till she cries no more- Cigarettes (her passion) slowly choked her to death. She was fragile, like the flower. Possessing all the beauty, hungry still for more- Possessing all the beautiful things life gave her, that wasn’t enough to her; and was craving for more passion. I can’t help this longing- She can’t wait anymore now, ready to die and go to heaven. Comfort me- She’s asking for God to take her, asking for death. I can’t hold it all in if you won’t let me- She can’t live like this anymore, the state of her body (pain) and mind (longing to find peace). Can’t hold on to life anymore if He doesn’t let her go to heaven soon enough, so considering suicide. In this white wave I am sinking, in this silence- She is dying and being overwhelmed with this bright light. She can’t see or hear anymore (white wave and silence), she is losing her senses, a connection with her body, and her spirit is left to linger here and find out if God will take her to heaven. In this white wave, in this silence I believe- She believes she will go to heaven. I have seen you in this white wave, you are silent You are breathing in this white wave I am free She finally sees God in the white light of silence. He’s alive and existing (breathing) and has come for her, and she is on her way to heaven. She finally finds peace and freedom. |
