This is my best shot at the meaning. "Opportunity called and I answered. It was the biggest mistake of my life. My lips dismissed my clear conscious. I kissed it goodbye." Here he's saying that he had a choice whether to cheat or not and he took it, but now feels guitly for what he did. "And if I could, I'd take it all back, take it all back, take it, And to the one I still wish I knew, I wish that I could make it up to you" Since then they've lost touch and he regrets making the choice that pushed her away. "Now I'm sitting at a green light. I could sit here all night singing, "Where do I go from here?" Now I'm sitting at a green light. This could unintentionally be the end of me." Now he's living life and it would be acceptable and appropriate for him to move on but he can't knowing that if he did it wouldn't be the same as what he lost. That being said, he's stuck in a rut of nostalgia and the constant comparison of "her vs. them" that never seems to come out with anyone other than her as a winner. "And if I could, I'd take it all back, take it all back, take it, And to the girl whom I'll say, "I do." I wish that I could make it up to you." He thinks these emotional scars are something lasting because she was one of a kind and even if he manages to move on with someone else he's apologizing in advance because he knows that the thoughts of what could have been will still linger. "A guilty conscious needs no accuser. My guilty conscious is no excuse for this. With my God as my guide, my wounds will heal in time, In time." He's saying he knows what he did and it's no excuse for him to be in the rut that he's found himself in, he's going to move even though he's not fully sure if he's ready, he'll try. |

Great song! From what I get out of it, It's more or less about a long "dragged out" relationship that the writer is almost unsure why he feels the need to stay around, but knows he feels something. He understands that this relationship is very one sided and at this point unrealistic, especailly when you think of the artists dreams of touring and such with more traditional plans; i.e: marriage, career, or educational plans. No matter what he knows it really doesn't change how he can't help but feel because of all the time they spent together. Being torn, this song seems to be him weighing his choices. |
