| Piebald is a band from Massachusetts, and this song is about an experience in one of the Carolinas. From my experience, there can be a weak affinity between the two places. The former tends to more secular, while the latter has rates of church attendance. One is faster paced, the other slower paced. This song reflects that difference and the difficulty of an experience someone from the "culturally rich" Massachusetts had down south, where life can seem so different, perhaps unfathomably so, that it breaks one's (his, the songwriter's) heart. The concept of history is addressed in the song, and it seems there's a sense in which certain historical elements of culture and society that citizens of New England might think have passed away or do not exist in the United States are in fact found somewhere. And THIS is what breaks the heart, the American heart. | |
