Ice Age refers to the transition in human history (about 3 ~ 5 thousand years ago) when humans lost the ability to experience hallucinations. Ancients had a stronger connection to their right brain hemisphere, and were essentially automatons guided by pure intuition, which they experienced as audio-visual hallucinations and considered to be "the voice of god." Migration and war were two factors which forced humans to become more left-brained. As the left hemisphere is more logical, it destroyed our ability to "hear both sides." This was a terrifying episode in human history as they had essentially lost their connection to "god." They turned to patriarchal religions for guidance, and put their trust in the priesthood. This was natural, as the priests were initiated in the use of hallucinogenics to induce experiences which used to occur naturally and spontaneously. The "mobiles" refer to traveling merchants who got in bed with the newly empowered priesthood. As ancient temples were also centers of commerce, this enabled the merchants/priests to create the false paradigms of "debt = sin" and "interest-based money." Interest is the fallacy that money can simply sit there and have children, as it were alive. Through these paradigms, the elite have been exploiting human labor for thousands of years (take the money and run). |

The meaning is in the title. Hello!?? In fact most of people's comments are spot on, as far as general themes. Addiction, giving into one's weakness, denial of reality. And so on. We citizens of the developed nations can all relate to that. Very much so. That is why western civilization is going to "default." Our consumerism is rampant. I just purchased a nice winter coat, on sale for 30 US dollars. I make 30 dollars sitting at a computer for 2 hours and checking email. Would I last 2 hours in a foreign sweatshop? Doubt it. I haven't paid my student loans in forever, either. I cannot afford to because my rent is off the charts. So when the economy goes to hell, it will be my fault. Partly. Peace |

This is possibly one of the most esoteric songs ever. Rosemary West interpretation does hold water and was possibly an inspiration, but more generally it has to be about post-death experience. Video was a fairly blatant clue. Chorus makes it clearer: It took a lifespan with no cellmate (a soul trapped in a body) The long way back (mundane "life" in a physical reality, we have to get through the drudgery to "return" to heaven) Why can't we look the other way? (once the soul resides inside a body, it can ONLY experience reality through the body and cannot relate to any other perspective. whereas after death, consciousness is universal.) evil = live spelled backwards "smart like all peoples" having a double meaning because "physical life" makes us wiser through experience, but "smart" also means to "hurt." As for Rosemary, I would point out that Rose is anagram for Eros which is love, also related to "evil," "live," "veil." Maybe not etymologically correct, technically speaking, but its a pun. Life is a veil, under which we can only experience the particular and not the universal. Mary derives from "Mar" meaning water, which leads to the beach metaphor and all the references to sand. I would interpret this duality thus: human body is "land" whereas a free-floating soul is in the "water." "Sand" is also likened to "pollen," because where would the soul reside but in the reproductive faculties! |
