He is watching the 10 o'clock news, which is airing a story about a plainclothes policeman who was shot on the steps of the capitol, and they flash a picture of his lover, who has been interrogated and beaten badly. |

This song is about a wealthy young man who has deluded himself into thinking he and a poor girl, Miranda, are in love, when in actuality, she does not love him back. He abducts her and takes her to a field, and then he rapes her. (A dirty daughter from the labour cans, I laid you down on the grass of a clearing, You wept but your soul was willing) He then takes her up to his veranda, which is implied to be above a deep body of water, and forces her to jump to her death with him in a dual suicide. |
