This song is taken from the poem by Dylan Thomas called "Do not go gentle into that good night". The song (as is the poem) is about fighting against death and finding the will to live. The first lines gives the impression of a soul passing from the world into eternity. A soul who is "giving up the fight" floats "in the clouds" and begins "walking into the light" The light symbolizes death and is commonly interpreted as what someone sees when they die hence the phrase "don't go toward the light" etc. Note that he begins saying he is walking toward the light Through the song the speaker reminisces about his life. The name of the song comes from his view as he looks back on his life and feels it as so sudden or quick.Though he has had troubles and wants to give up the song has a turn around after the second chorus (Are you dying all your life?..)The turnaround (Don't suppose that you know the way..) is a conversation with himself, him weighing the options in his mind. He realizes that he has regrets and wants to live to make it right. Finally my favorite part of the song “So no I won't go gentle Into the good night” which is paraphrased from the Poem mentioned earlier. Then the speaker says he is “walking away from the light” changing what he said earlier and choosing life and fighting death. This is a very thoughtful song and one of my favorite off The Black Market album |
