@[MorbidWhisper:20972] I think the last part needs to be looked at in a larger context than just the last lines. My heart's getting harder, I'm calling my father (He's calling out to God in prayer) Am I screaming to an empty sky? (He questions if God is even there or listening) Empty sky, no way, that's me 'cause one half of my heart is free Empty sky, no way, that's me 'cause the other half of my heart's asleep. (Here he realizes it's neither God nor an empty sky devoid of God that he;s really calling out to. He's calling out to himself, one half to the other.) That's my take on it anyhow. |

| @[queencat:20971] I'm with you on this one. I can totally see the mental health angle by other posters, but I personally connect to this song via a romantic angle. Someone you can't get out of your head, someone you dream about even when you no longer want to. You'll never admit it to the person, so they'll never know what's 'behind your skull'. They'll never know what you're thinking of, or what you believe regarding your past together. Half of you wants to, or even has, moved on. The other half though seems to be stuck, or asleep. There's a war inside you over how you think you should feel and how you naturally feel. You want to be afraid for your future or even current relationship but you're drowning in it all. You let another day go by in this state. You call to God for help with it all, but you feel like you're calling to an empty sky. Then you realize you're actually calling out to yourself, one half to the other. | |

Being Bipolar myself, it's obvious to me the first half is about the disorder. "Relapse, prevent, trigger, intent".. all words having to do with it that you'll hear in therapy or if you read up on it a lot. The second half he switches who he's talking to a bit and addresses a person from his past. People with bipolar disorder frequently have turbulent relationships and can hurt others who don't understand so well or who can't cope (no blame here), so it actually ties in well, at least for me. I really appreciate the way Blue October captures in words what it's really like to be bipolar. Another great one to listen to if you want to get inside the head of someone with mental illness is Schizophrenia. Listening to them makes me feel like I'm not so alone and that there is a way to communicate this world to people "outside". |

| Keep in mind where he is from too, this song is RIFE with references to Arizona. But I like you're interpretation too, when you add in AZ it's just even better :) | |
