| I just realized... I wonder if this song is connected to the girl's suicide in "in command of cars"? | |

The lyrics and vocal tone are much stronger and bleaker than a breakup... I think it's about the death of a loved one, possibly a suicide. Despite the present tense, it overwhelmingly seems like the subject is dead (or is very depressed, dead inside?) "Maybe there's hope in just one final second A flash of her love as she waves us goodbye Don't torture yourself with what we might have given We did everything that we could ever do" seems very characteristic of the mourning people do when someone has committed suicide-- looking back, did she love us, did she hate us when she did it? Is there anything I could have done? What could I have said to prevent this? Either way- a heartbreaking and very honest song. |

When I hear this song it makes me think of a girl who's an escort, or a girl who's got a sugar daddy. The lyrics just seem to match: "I've sold all my gold", "I'm drinking for free", etc. Like she has a secret life, in another town with another man she's built a completely separate existence ("A girl just like me".) Then when she changes tone and starts the "I love you" sections, she's singing to a spouse or a significant other back home. The "another town" parts sound confident and just sort of matter-of-fact, she's stating all these things that she has got in this different city. But the "I love you"s sound sad and almost apologetic. |
