Steve Miller Band – Fly Like An Eagle Lyrics 2 years ago
This song is about the DREAM (the deep-seated dream inside most all of us) to solve world poverty, to have the vision of an eagle where we can help every last person suffering from extreme poverty in the streets.

Depeche Mode – Blasphemous Rumours Lyrics 4 years ago
UGH!!! The above pasted (?) lyrics DON'T EVEN INCLUDE THE MOST IMPORTANT VERSE (!):

Girl of eighteen
Fell in love with everything
Found new life in Jesus Christ
Hit by a car Ended up
On a life support machine

It's the 16yo girl two years later. Yes, it's about the unfairness of life, in this case how she tried to commit suicide, then when she finally found God, she was struck by a car. So it's not just about life's unfairness (superficial reading). It's also a stab at religion consistent with Martin's beliefs. I was singing this song at the gym, and when I read that sixteen verse and then the eighteen verse, I said I got to go online to check this out.

It's because of those 2 verses that the main line is "....but I think that God's got a sick sense of humour". Without reading or knowing about the "eighteen" verse, u can't really make sense of the song.

This story is extremely tragic and ultra-dark. I want to know if there was a SPECIFIC girl in mind that this was about.

Volbeat – The Devil's Bleeding Crown Lyrics 6 years ago
I think 4 anonymous posters on lyricinterpretations.com got it pretty close. Here's what they wrote:

►My take is god cast down satan and the men of the earth picked up his crown either in victory or to take his place

►It's much easier to pick up the devils bleeding crown than it is to show faith in GOD.

►I believe it's stating how they (angels now devil and his legion) were cast out of heaven and sent to hell but letting you know that the devil is here and wants to rule. The bleeding crown part I feel is there because Jesus was crucified with a crown of thorns on his head.

►I think it is about the nephilim, children of angels and mortal women. The nephilim were consider kings who required sacrifices. God wiped them out with a flood. The angels were cast out of heaven.

...

My own take, after having read all of those interpretations and more, is that this song is kind of an anthem, where the key lines are actually, "Raise your hands, what do you hold? The Devil's bleeding crown!", where the bleeding crown is a combination of references to: 1) victory over satan & his legion of fallen angels in that lendendary 2nd to last verse (including "Close the door and hear all the angels scream "Oh mercy, mercy, mercy, oh mercy, please!"") ; 2) Jesus' crucifixion; and (of course), 3) all of us who ever raised our hands up at any rock concert, making the sign of the devil (aka "rock and roll dude!") representing, I would suggest, victory over our demons from the virtual exorcism rock imparts.

Rammstein – Sonne Lyrics 6 years ago
@[sl8734:21661] Good points. Yeah, I think what you're describing (the way I understood it) is related to concepts of existentialism and how we ascribe/assign meaning to (for argument's sake) otherwise meaningless things in order to...well, give our lives "meaning". As a possible example, lorne from song facts wrote "In the music video, the band members play the 7 Dwarves. They mine gold, which Snow White then crushes up and snorts like cocaine - at the end of the video she overdoses." ... which, to me, is a lot like what you're saying, where the 7 dwarves (representing all of us, in a sense) aspire to / work hard for something ...that, ultimately sucks all our resources (aka Nietzsche's "will of power") and the goal ends up being something we were terribly wrong about. Lorne also mentions "At one point, the band thought of making a video, in which they'd play the crew of the Enola Gay dropping the bomb on Hiroshima. First there would have been the refrain ("Hier kommt die Sonne...") and then they'd show the explosion. They also wanted to show how after years the crew committed suicide, as they were mentally broken when they realized what they had done." Reading your insightful take, one can't help but think back to the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche: From wiki: "Some prominent elements of his philosophy include his radical critique of truth in favor of perspectivism; his genealogical critique of religion and Christian morality, and his related theory of master–slave morality; his aesthetic affirmation of existence in response to the "death of God" and the profound crisis of nihilism; his notion of the Apollonian and Dionysian; and his characterization of the human subject as the expression of competing wills, collectively understood as the will to power." {sic: footnotes omitted}.

Nihilism (ibid), "is a philosophical doctrine that suggests the lack of belief in one or more reputedly meaningful aspects of life. Most commonly, nihilism is presented in the form of existential nihilism, which argues that life is without objective meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value. Moral nihilists assert that there is no inherent morality, and that accepted moral values are abstractly contrived. Nihilism may also take epistemological, ontological, or metaphysical forms, meaning respectively that, in some aspect, knowledge is not possible, or reality does not actually exist.

The term is sometimes used in association with anomie to explain the general mood of despair at a perceived pointlessness of existence that one may develop upon realising there are no necessary norms, rules, or laws. Movements such as futurism and deconstruction, among others, have been identified by commentators as "nihilistic"."

So, in short, I think you hit it on the head. And hope my 2 cents can afford the cherry on top.

Great website.

@[TheRulnig:17457] I disagree. It is the backbone (chorus-wise) of the song, and the idea is that it keeps reminding the audience (us), of the CONTRAST that they're trying to draw. You have to work into your interpretation that concept (the contrast and repeated verse), the idea of propaganda and the song title. Question is, beyond the obvious (less aware people), what's the real msg of that verse? I'm still trying to figure it out. Everything else is obvious. The song is incredible.

@[leonard102:17452] nice interp. I had a different perspective about #4. @[agis100000:17450] I think this answer makes the most sense in retrospect as I always listen to the song. It feels right. But I can't argue with slobs2's comment, which wouldn't be as meaningful. Honestly, I often thought that it was about a guy who was killed or taken in by the Chinese who happened to be in the area, and to highlight the govt tyrrany, the song repeats that verse, ie as in the wrong guy...but, I think I like your impression best so far.

@[LetTheSunRainDownOnMe:6756] Yeah, that's very possible. Could be a prostitute, a stripper, or escort. Some would say they're all the same. Anyway, he grew up in Las Vegas, the proud home of all these types of services. Surely he had to have encountered 1 of them along the way. So he recounts this story as a resurrected vampire, cold and unemotional in his desire for revenge or justice.

@[glassangelrose:6755] I like your section:
...
"Say what you mean
Tell me I'm right
And let the sun rain down on me
Give me a sign
I want to believe"-

He's trying to figure out what she means- she's hard to read, doesnt know what she's saying- kind of like the Mona Lisa, hence the name of this song.

I like it because that's the basic concept of the song and his inability to connec emotionally with this prosty with whom he really wanted to connect. That's how she killed him metaphorically, but he's bitter about it, and so he turned cold like a vampire and rose from the coffin to recount the story, and exact some justice, finding the girl with the sign, "Mary did it."

@[atemu1234:6752] Interesting perspective. See, my take on it was he himself was noticing a lot of missing or empty bottles of Gin, and so I don't think she killed him with Gin. @[icemetalpunk:6750] Sure. Well, the internal conflict could have played another way: he could have had an encounter with a prosty, or, with just a plain old girl who was cheating on him. The duality shows in him being killed by her metaphorically from a complete lack of emotional reciprocation, and turning him cold like the vampire he rose as, in order to recount the story and meet out some justice.

@[cheylee96:6747] It's 'cuz he really liked the prosty, but, being a prosty, she either didn't know how or wouldn't get close to him. Maybe it was his first time so he might have been very impressionable, combined with a great experience. However, she would not give him that non-physical stuff that we all need. And that killed him...but he rose from the dead/coffin, as a now equally-cold-blooded vampire to call her out on what she did (or did not do).

@[Kellen96:6744] Right on. Good points, esp that last one re top hat zoom out then back into Brendan. He did a similar trick in Mona Lisa with his alterego who was the one unveiled (hey, let's be honest, most of the time the lead singer plays the lead roles and it's usually about something that happened to them), but Mona Lisa is a *rockin' video on ever level. Good insight, thanks.I was actually thinking the same thing when that part today.

Panic! at the Disco – The Ballad of Mona Lisa Lyrics 8 years ago
First things first. Huge credit to this beautifully-done piece of art from choreography to costumes to lyrics to sound, videography & a kick-a** steampunk performance. This is one of the best videos I've ever seen. I hope my interpretation makes a difference.

OK, reading through everyone's thoughts, it's pretty impressive. I think everyone's got at least 1 piece of the puzzle or multiple (hat tip to iblehs re "Da Vinci" mystery). Reading through them and watching the video several times makes it much easier, lol. But here's my take, after crediting everyone else first for their intelligent input:

imho, there are actually 4 dualities smartly intertwined.

FIRST, you have what most here agree on is the more obvious prostitute "plot" where he wants more than physical with her (maybe it was his first but he was impressionable). When she couldn't provide that, it "killed" him (but, like Jesus, he rose again from his coffin, as a vampire to recount this story, and find justice (Mary did it)

...which you could see he needed cuz it broke him and he was now cold and emotionless, like a vampire. It sucked the life out of him (not unlike a vampire). That's my interpretation and is the SECOND duality.

The THIRD and final duality is wisely commented on by RawrmeansILY, who talked about this being a great (I would say *perfect*) analogy to the typical unhappily married couple. R's words speak for themselves and s/he gets everything dead-on imho.

And, of course, like so many have commented, the Mona Lisa concept speaks for itself "I'd pay to see you frown" (he would have gladly paid for something less cold, specifically "frown", now, because he's back for justice and she was always the emotional pokerface with him.

I like these 2 verses:
******
He senses something, call it desperation
Another dollar, another day
And if she had the proper words to say,
She would tell him
But she'd have nothing left to sell him

Say what you mean
Tell me I'm right
And let the sun rain down on me
Give me a sign
I want to believe
******

I like them because whether she was a prostitute (or unhappy spouse in the THIRD duality), he wanted to see something real, something genuine and to connect emotionally. That unreciprocated emotional connection with this prostitute (or wife) killed him. Oh yeah, the FOURTH "duality" could be the duality of a spouse playing around behind his back. So in those last 2 lines above:

Give me a sign
I want to believe

He could ALSO be intelligently hinting that, like a really faithful husband, despite all these things he's seen and near complete loss of trust, "Give me a sign" (that you love me and that you're using me for my status) ..."I want to believe".

The genius of this song (besides everything in my first paragraph) is the BRILLIANTLY written piece of art that interweaves these 4 dualities, making this song and video timeless.

Cake – Comfort Eagle Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is GENIUS on all levels because it analogizes the commercialization of the music industry to the institutionalization of religion AND (as wisely noted earlier) to the drug industry.

Note that it's the "wacky morning DJ" who he's referring to when he goes on to getting the callers addicted (great writeup by the user who ended with "Need I go further?" (sorry I didn't get the username) to the commercialized music:

"He is handling the money
He is serving the food"

Thanks for your comment NG880. My additional comment would be that I thought of the SAME exact thing in their verse:

There's no need to ask directions
If you ever lose your mind
We're behind you
We're behind you
And let us please remind you
We can send a car to find you
If you ever lose your way

It's cleverly written because it's intentionally ambiguously written to potentially be read in 2 ways: like this:

There's no need to ask directions
If you ever lose your mind
We're behind you
We're behind you

The above 1st concept byte could be referring to EITHER the label OR the socialization of government that a huge percentage of millenials aren't getting as the continue to accept its pablum.

AND then this 2nd way with the break here:

We're behind you
We're behind you
And let us please remind you
We can send a car to find you
If you ever lose your way

That's your government talking...watching. ;) give you the PRETENSE of control, when, in reality, you're giving them the power to control you, monitor your calls etc (even though this song goes back a long time) when you allow them to watch over you. "I is useless to resist us. To resist it is useless" is when we voluntarily allow ourselves to be taken under the wing of something that doesn't actually care at all about you..."and let us please remind you..." :) , and "the waky morning DJ says democracy's a joke".
