| Metallica – Atlas, Rise! Lyrics

This is a song addressed to a person who carries the weight of the world on their shoulders metaphorically speaking like the figure Atlas from greek mythology. The lyrics points out how this person thinks he/she is the cause of the problems in the world which is both harmful to the person and quite self-centered when in fact you are just one person. The chorus encourages the person to let go of this weight so that he/she can enjoy life again. I find it to be a very optimistic and encouraging song although its also tough love. |

I believe this song is a conversation between the narrator (Bono) and his younger self. Bono has stated that many songs on the album ("Songs of Experience") are letters to different persons in his life this can be seen as two letters. The first letter is in the two first verses and are from the young Bono to his current self. It's a very tough view on himself and the person he has become - the hypocrisy and dishonesty that he practices now and that his younger self would see right through. The second letter is where the song changes (from the "Sometimes..." part). From that point it is the current Bono confessing to his younger self that he is right... all might seem fine on the surface but beneath it he is angry, frightened and anxious. It is like a confession both to his younger self and his audience and a very courageous one in my opinion. I believe the song ends on a slightly more hopeful note - the guitar indicates a more hopeful tone and even though the end seems to be here - and one day will surely come - it is still only "sometimes" that the darkness wins. |

| Metallica – Here Comes Revenge Lyrics

James has said that the inspiration for this song came from two fans - a married couple, who had lost their child to a drunk driver. The song is basically Hetfield singing from that perspective thus the intro "Little grave I'm grieving, I will mend you". It's a dark but very human song. I dont believe it glorifies revenge but it shows how the need for revenge can take ove and seem to be the only way forward. |

| Metallica – Halo on Fire Lyrics

I believe this song touches the theme of childhood trauma and in a way can be seen as a spiritual successor to the song Enter Sandman. Both songs are about a child (my interpretation) going to sleep but dark thoughts making sleep impossible. The darkness doesnt just come from the night but are way worse - they wont go away
even when the light is turned on, and in a way the night becomes a comfort where the darkness can live its own life without confronting the real world. Both songs have religious references ("halo on fire", "prayers cannot get through", "pray the lord my soul to keep" etc.). It is known that James Hetfield was brought up as a christian scientist which he came to hate as their belief played a part in his mothers death to illness (not allowing medicine but only healing thorugh prayer etc).
The end of the song is interesting with the lyrics "Hello darkness, say goodbye". In themselfes this can be interpreted in many ways - but the music that is played when these lines are sung are epic and uplifting. This indicates that the protagonist of the song have found a way out of the darkness - the darkness is still there for sure but he is now able to recognise it and say both hello and goodbye to it. This is a very different ending when compared to Enter Sandman that ends on a darker note. Halo on Fire thus becomes a song not only about trauma but about overcoming it as well. |

| Manic Street Preachers – Your Love Alone Is Not Enough Lyrics

I recognise this problem in a lot of people - myself included more times than id like to admit. Love alone wont change the world and can lead to disastrous results on a personal level when its disappointed. The worst being a disengagement from the world - the ultimate withdrawal being suicide. |
