I think this song is about a car crash and the final moments of a dying friend or relative and the person's struggle with PTSD ("I can see for miles, miles, miles" - like the thousand-yard stare characteristic of PTSD) and to get over not being able to save them ("At once I knew I was not magnificent" - not good enough to save them). "Hulled far from the highway" - suggests that the accident happened on the highway and the car and/or person was thrown off the highway. It's such a sad song and I don't honestly think it could possibly be about weather epochs or whatever, but rather must relate to a tragic incident, either real or imagined. |
