This song is simply about suburban life. Its like Stephen M took one out of the Monkees playbook. What I mean by this is that this song is like Pleasant Valley Sunday by The Monkees. I remember growing up to that song thinking it was a positive song about life and its joys but truly it was about the pitfalls and reality of what really is good old Suburbia. This song is describing the mundane existence of the suburban lifestyle but yet we as people still clamor for it and when we get it we think yeah we are god and I got me a slice of heaven but along with that comes a wife and kids so one is truly not free but by the time we realize it its to late. Most of us want stability and suburbia to many is this hence the term but all we really want is a Shady Lane which is possible a street name. I know from experience it seems like every town I've been to has a least one Shady lane. But Malkmus is above this and you can see that in the song. He wants to go beyond the Shady lane. I could also mention Bob Seeger's Main St. Another great song most of us can relate to. Every town has a Main St. |
