While a love song, it is really about hoping to survive an atomic bomb, the "sh-boom" representing the sound of nuclear explosion. This is even confirmed by one the singers in The Chords, the group who wrote the song. |

This song is obviously about Ian Curtis, and it uses the situation of a soldier at war wanting to return home to his family to describe the struggle Curtis had with reconciling his relationship with his wife and his affair with Annik Honore.
Obviously he died at war, and his ghost sees his wife reading the letter that he died, as you would imagine Debbie Curtis finding Ian's suicide note after discovering his body hanging.
It's a really tragic and sad song, and I don't think Barney was making a statement or judgement on the situation. It's more like a reflection or musing on what happened. |
