Another one of a kind beautiful and sad song about life that makes you think! It's one of the greats for many reasons. One is Stevie's ability to write such wickedly awesome lyrics that almost everyone can identify with that can be interpreted in so many different ways. I've found myself thinking about what it meant to Stevie when she wrote it and also what her lyrics specifically mean to me. Being a songwriter myself I know that many great songwriters write songs that can be perceived in many different ways depending on the person and what happens to be going on in your life at the moment. I think Stevie was clearly at a crossroads in her life. She needed to make some big decisions that would bring on some big changes. I believe the line "I'm afraid of changing 'cause I built my life around you' Stevie is referring her lover who she still loves very much but it has run it's course and a change is clearly needed but she afraid of the changes and consequences that will be brought on if she leaves him. She's somewhat confused and asks in the song, "what is love"? She also makes it clear that time is going by rather quickly and "she's getting older which makes you bolder", implying that she's older, bolder, wiser and she is prepared to go through with what she need to do no matter in order to escape misery. "Can I sail through Ocean Tides...handle the seasons of my life"? This is a great line! Just a brilliant way to explain the huge ripple affect from the decisions and changes she is about to commence and the possibility of it being very difficult to get through...or will she be able to sail right through it without loosing or changing other important things or people's faith, respect and friendship that are extremely important to her! I think the "can I handle the seasons in my life" line is referring more to getting older and the responsibilities and other changes that are inevitably going to happen or desperately need to happen(like controlling her drug addiction for example) in other areas of her personal life. I be willing to bet that the lyrics she wrote to this song helped her BIG-TIME to get through all of these tough decisions and changes that were about to engulf her and ultimately begin changing her life as she knows it. I know that songs that I have written have helped me see a path to take to get where I want to go or need to be that I did not see at all before writing the song. It can be very therapeutic, help build your confidence as well as bring on a tremendous sense of pride, accomplishment and satisfaction! |

Wow, every one of the interpretations of this song that I just read was fantastic. I personally love everything about this song. A truly great song like this one is so good because it makes you think not just about what it might mean to Sarah but also how it's positive messages can easily be identified by the listener and interpreted into what the song means to them, individually. No one has mentioned this yet but this song was actually written for the Movie: The Brave One (w/Jodie Foster). If you know or read up on the premise of the movie, the lyrics make pretty good sense. Being that Sarah is so enormously talented I don't doubt her ability to make it a somewhat about her life experiences as well. One person (indigodifranco) previously wrote that she saw her in concert and heard her say that she wrote the song about her husband's gentle dedication he has shown her over the years...which very well could be also true. Being a songwriter myself, I truly love how a great song like this can mean so much in so many different ways to so many different people! That's a true sign of a phenomenal song. If you are still reading...(lol) This song has an incredible deep, special meaning to me. When I listen or read the lyrics I think about an incredible, beautiful girl who means the world to me. We used to be a couple many years ago and even through we've chosen different paths since the days that we were together we have never stopped loving each other and periodically dream about being together again. Of course there are complications...obstacles in the way of this being anywhere near a simple or an easy thing to do. I sent the Lyrics to Answer to her years ago and for me it means that I will always be there for her. It tells her how important she is...that all I know is that I need her in my life. And while she takes the time in the burning of uncertainty I will be her solid ground and hold the balance if she can't look down.I wont break I wont bend means (I wont ever change my mind about how I feel about you, that even after the stars have burned out she will still be burning bright. The part about erasing this from my memory, the burden of chossing not to fight, (to me means that I wish I had not let her slip away so easy way back then). (I guess I always thought we would come back around and end up being together one day but I didn't foresee the enormity of the obstacles we would need to overcome, particularly hers. So, on one hand I'm so lucky and thankful to have a soul-mate kind of a friend in life...which is rare! But on the other hand it's hard to be virtually helpless in the quest to get her back. All I can do is be patient and let her come to me on her own free will by being myself and hoping that one day she realizes that we're destined to be together and that the true happiness and love she's been looking for and deserves she will find reunited in a new life with me. I truly believe, when the time is right, it will happen and we will be together. Wish us luck! ;-) And, good luck to all of you readers and writers as well! May we all find true everlasting love & happiness! |

I enjoyed reading all the comments/ideas about the possible meanings of this song. As a songwriter myself, I the beauty of certain songs in particular is it allows the listener to easily identify with the words of the song and kind of make their own interpretation of what the song means to them. Quite often that's exactly what the songwriting artist was hoping for.
I happened to hear a clip of Norah talking about how she got the idea for this song. She said her and a good friend of hers used to go to an ocean beach and Norah would look over at her friend and notice the way she would gaze out at the sea and and up at the stars. She would look at them as if they were so beautiful and peaceful that she wished she could just leave this tiny world and fly up to the heavens and become a star herself, overlooking the ocean, leaving behind the burden of all the problems and complications one can acquire from living in a beautiful but sometimes extremely complicated world. Then I believe she simply elaborates further about what she may be thinking and what other people (listeners) might also think about what its like to feel small and insignificant in this big dog-eat-dog world we live in. eg: Rosie calls out put the big ships but they just pass her by. I believe there's an underlying message in this song from Norah to not ever give up. Don't get discouraged! Keep pursuing your dreams that will one day make you happy no matter what! Believe in yourself and your good qualities and they will one day be significantly recognized. eg: The moon's looking down sayin' Rosie, come with me, close your eyes and dream! The moon is Rosie's strength and encouragement to keep at it and not give up. Oh, I don't believe Rosie is Norah's real friend's name...it's just made up for the song. |

I think comment #1 is kind of on the right track but to elaborate a bit further, I believe this is someone she has had history with and deeply cares about. There's a good possibility she's writing about her relationship with Bassist, Lee Alexander. They actually end up breaking up sometime within the next year. I think the message of the song is she saying lets wipe away the haze from the days of the past. Mistakes were made on both side but she wants a new start and is praying for him to slow down his words and telling him positive things about how it used to be, hoping maybe he'll realize what's really important and that whatever bickering, arguing or other issues they've had in the past have become somewhat meaningless, pointless and insignificant. So, let's get back to what made us happy in the beginning which is really whats important! So, please don't leave, be with me tonight and lets try and find what we once had between us! |
