This song is basically about a guy in love with a girl who is in a bad relationship, and he is continuously having to watch helplessly as she "runs back off to the riptide". He was kind of insecure and uptight himself (He is afraid of dark, etc.) then met this girl who is very free spirited. He compares her to "magician's assistant", as if to say, to him she seens magical. And compares her to Michelle Pfeiffer, bc to him, she is a star. I agree with @[kILLt:2292] : Left hand man is opposite if right hand man (her go-to guy) so it seems she is already taken and the singer is not her bf. There are lines in the song where he references the other guy keeping her kind of chained up ("she's been living on the highest shelf"). He feels she is being kept, treated like property, etc. "I've got a lump in my throat cuz you always sing the words wrong" and "going off to the dark side", meaning he is afraid she is going to make the bad/wrong choice, or choose the other guy instead of him. He is watching her continuously "running off to the riptide", which is pretty much relationship suicide bc people are aware riptides can drown them, but choose to swim anyway. |

Singer lost relationship bc he paid attention to the wrong things. He wanted to get to know her better. So he anyzed everything she did. He spent so much time analyzing her this way, that he didnt get to know her in the classical sense, by just talking with her and junk. From the song it seems the relationship is over maybe bc she doesn't feel he really wants to know her. Scientists overthink everything. Its like seeing someone as a thing or object or a puzzle to figure out rather thn a person. He regrets, wants to start over and get to know her the right way. I agree with Manning. Its not about homosexuality. In general. Get over it. It is about a man who feels more saved by his lover, than his religion. Love the line about deathless death, ie. She is killing him...but in a good way. |

Agree with Guy2x and Semi76. I relate this song to feeling like everyone around you is pretending to be so spiritual and perfect, that you feel out of place bc you dont feel that same perfection. "I was an angel". She seems to be admitting to having a darker side of herself and the desire to express it bc it makes her feel good, but she feels judged by the do-gooders. The greatest freedom is in being who you truly are. "No ones gonna take my soul away". She doesn't believe that anyone else has the authority to condemn her. She isn't afraid of being judged by her peers. This is my fiance's favorite song. She listens to it every day. Should I be worried? Lol |

Welcome to the New Age :) When the singer was coaching on The Voice, he said it was abt he and his wife and how they used to struggle but now have money and everything. I feel that "counting stars" is a metaphor for wondering what else is out there. Its like ok i have money and fame now, but is there something more to this life? "Everything that kills me makes me feel alive" (my favorite line) can be compared to the old religious teachings of thinking that certain things are sins...and the speaker here disagrees. He is saying that the things he has been taught are wrong and will damn him...are the things that make him feel happiest and free. |

Music Industry, fame, etc. This song may have been DEDICATED to a kid with cancer but that is NOT what the lyrics are explaining. It wouldnt make sense. When the singer was coaching on The Voice, he said it was abt he and his wife and how they used to struggle but now have money and everything. From there you can understand the lyrics to be abt the music industry. He is basically saying that he is doing all of this for her "this is all for you, dont wanna hide the truth"...but he knows it comes at a price. Its like selling your soul. He is doing what he believes he has to do to make her life better. |

I think its from the guys point of view. He is probably narcissistic or a mind game player and he likes to use/abuse girls just bc he can. It makes him feel powerful. He is bad and wants to make anyone good be bad like he is. From the lines abt the "town not being big enough for two", it seems maybe he has met his match finally. Someone who is just like him. Love is a hell of a drug. Sounds to me like a guy with blue (sad) eyes is talking about loving a woman he shouldn't. Most of the lyrics speak of very strong emotional RESTRAINT. Possibly over her not loving him back, jealousy of her other man, or just anger that she is making him feel all these emotions like jealousy, anger, sadness, and love. "And i blame YOU." And as much as he has to hide his bad emotions, he has to hide the good ones too, so she (or anyone else maybe) will find out. Like the verse where he catches his self smiling, and asks her to stop him...bc he might show the truth. He loves her.. He is trying to hide how she makes him feel. |
