Bruce Springsteen – Galveston Bay Lyrics 9 years ago
Another great song from this album.Starts out showing the similarities of each mans lives;in the beginning both fighting on the same side.
Then one man,Billy, fueled by fiery rhetoric, begins to view his "brother in arms" as an unwanted alien, forgetting that the other,Le, was also fighting for his freedom, the same freedom that Billy and all Americans cherish.
Billys anger drives him to contemplate murder, but in the end he realizes that Le is not unlike himself, and his anger subsides as he takes a "live and let live" attitude.

Bruce Springsteen – Dry Lightning Lyrics 9 years ago

Yes.The dry lightning symbolizes unfulfilled promise of what could have been.
Lightning on the horizon signals rain coming, but dry lightning is a cruel ruse,
leading one to believe for a time that something positive(rain) is going to occur, but never does.

Bruce Springsteen – Sinaloa Cowboys Lyrics 9 years ago
Here is what I got from this song.I think that there is a price to be paid for a persons deeds.
The 2 brothers, wanting more money, chose to leave their "honest" work in favor of cooking meth,a drug that spreads death and despair to many.
Their greed overcame their sense of right and wrong, and in the end one of them paid the ultimate price for it.
Blood for blood.

Bruce Springsteen – Dry Lightning Lyrics 11 years ago
A really beautiful song among many from this outstanding album.Springsteen shines best when it's just him and an acoustic guitar,IMO.The word picture he paints using "Dry Lightning" as a metaphor for something that is less that what it appears,in this case his relationship with a lady is really very lovely, and the way he sings the lyrics, with a forlorn sense of coming to grips with the situation is powerful in it's simplicity.

One of my all time favorite songs.

Warren Zevon – Carmelita Lyrics 11 years ago
A lovely song, showing a different side of Warren that proves him to be a truly multifaceted type of performer.
I take the song lyrics at "face value"and as having this meaning;a heroin junkie is longing for something from his past,in this case a woman.
Incidentally, there is a version that refers to pawning his" Smith & Wesson",but in later versions it was changed to "Smith-Corona".
Not sure why the change was made.Warren was not generally a "Politically Correct" type of guy.
Maybe he softened up a bit in his "old age". : )
And lastly, the phrase "Well, I'm sittin' here playing solitaire With my pearl-handled deck" most likely refers to a person contemplating ending it all with his pearl handled pistol, which makes more sense lyrically if he would have kept the "Smith & Wesson reference in his song.

Lucinda Williams – Essence Lyrics 11 years ago
Great song from a great songwriter.I do not believe that this song is about drugs,at least not the drugs that we all tend to think of first, the literal ones.
This song is about the attraction one can have for another. She is comparing her longing for him to the longing that a junkie has for his heroin,or whatever drug of choice.

Elliott Smith – Ballad of Big Nothing Lyrics 11 years ago
Let's not get to comfortable with subscribing drugs to everything Elliot wrote.
"Candy" can mean anything thought to be alluring or rewarding, from drugs to applause and everything in between.
I think some here have been shaking hands with Elliots' monkey a bit too much : )
