This song along with this entire album is about drug addiction and recovery, from every perspective of those involved. This song in particular is about the people around an addict. The signs are there, but they didn't want to see it. Believe me, it's a lot easier to deny that your child or loved one has a problem than to see the obvious. Ignoring the smoke, if you will. |

"Burn the boats back to who we used to be" This line really gets me. It's like it's saying it's okay to not look back, to accept the person you became after the damage was done and the dust has settled. You're somebody new and sometimes you feel the need to be who you were before you were hurt in order to feel normal again. I think this is saying it's okay to not look back. |

This, to me, screams heroin. If you think there's nothing sexual or sensual to drugs, you've never done them. I think this is about being so against something (say, your lover is an addict) and then giving in, and realizing that you wanted to give in the whole time "Knew you were faking just a little bit" And "Now that you taste it, no need to fight it cause you're giving in " This speaks to me on a personal level for that reason. |
