This song, put simply, means 'waking up'. It's about changing the status quo of your own mind. Changing your perspective, sometimes painfully, in order to break free from an old, obsolete, damaging part of your own identity. As opposed to 'closing the switch' and letting the current pass through, instead 'open the switch' and move through the gate to see what possibilities await on the other side. It's about destroying the old familiar and stagnant in favor of the new and unknown possibilities. Kinda like being born, it's a terrifying process. But literally everything awaits on the other side of this barrier. Just listen to the lyrics with all of that in mind and everything about this song falls into place. |

| OP hit it squarely in the suicide. I relate to so many Doves songs. Some are inscrutable, some as clear as day. This one reminds me whenever I was hooked hopelessly on opioids and was thinking about suicide everyday. Luckily I managed to kick that habit all by myself, no help from anybody, no rehab, no nothing but my own sick and tired of being sick and tired feeling of living day to day in fear of withdrawals. I'm still pretty fucked up in the head, but at least I don't have to worry about opioids anymore. | |

| I can hear singing but I have no idea if they're lyrics or just sounds. Anyway, this song is the reason why I discovered Doves to begin with. It was the music accompanying an unrelated video on YouTube, and I thought it was just awesome. It makes me feel like I'm in a dream. When I have those really awesome spectacular full color panoramic cosmic billion light years wide dreams, this song is what happens in those dreams. This song gives me the feeling of those dreams. It's the soundtrack to my epic dreamscapes. Also... the entire Krypton sequence at the beginning of Man of Steel is a great visual representation of what those dreams look like. | |
