Sarah McLachlan – Mary Lyrics 11 years ago
There's one line that gives it away. "A stranger's flesh is offered." This song inspired the book entitled "The Forest of Hands and Teeth". There's been a Zombie apocalypse. Mary is the hero in the book. Mary's become infected with the Zombie virus and doesn't know that she's turned into a Zombie. For the most part the world has been destroyed. That's why she asks about how long she's slept, why she feels so cold and why with trembling hands she reaches up for the offering of a stranger's flesh It is a song about what's been done to the earth, how few appreciate the wonderful gift we have. Now there's not much left of it's bounties. Zombies eat people and she doesn't want to eat her friends.. She was the protector of her friends and led them through the fire while the earth was burning. They were the last to know she'd become infected and the last to let it show to her they knew, and the last ones to become zombies too. .

If you go back to the original HD version of this video, you'll see footage of a graveyard and the woods surrounding it. All is silent with little movement in the footage... only the wind blowing and a few birds flying away. When you watch and listen, it's pretty clear that she's floating over it, stuck between life and death wanting to believe there's a heaven to go to, but she has a longing to stay on earth which is preventing her from leaving. The white wave had been a white wave of rage and fear that she experienced, which has now turned to a white wave of silence, and that's what she is floating on. When prays to God to help release her from her longing, he comforts her and she finally believes there's a heaven, as she sees him in the white wave of silence and he's alive and breathing. This is when she finds peace and realizes she is free. A white wave is also a type of moth that is drawn to a light, which is a metaphor for dying and being drawn to a bright light.

The word "white" is used to describe two types of feelings, "white with fear", and "white with rage". "Wave" is used to describe a feeling or condition, as in "a white wave of fear or rage sweeping over a person." A "white wave" is a moth that is attracted to light, which in this song is a metaphor for dying and being drawn towards the light. Passion chokes the flower..possessing all its beauty....hungry still for more-- suggests that a serial killer is choking her to death. I think the song is significant in that it starts off with asking for release - from someone--either God to release her, witness her, comfort her -- or else she's asking the killer to release his grip so that she can breathe. She claims to be "outside", suggesting her spirit is already outside of her body as she closes in on death, but has the possibility of returning if only the killer stop what he's doing. The "longing" she experiences is that of wanting air--she can't hold it all in (her desire for air) if he (God) won't let her, meaning she's asking God to save her. The white wave is one both she and the killer are in together -- her white wave of fear and his white wave of rage are one as he possesses all of her beauty. She wants to believe she's going to heaven when it's over. The last thing she sees in the white wave before the killer finishes her off is him breathing, still alive..yet silent, meaning his rage is over and she is dead...she is free. The white wave she is in now becomes the moth being drawn towards the light, as she truly believes in heaven now.

She's just been strangled by a serial killer. She asks God to release her from her body. Her spirit is outside wanting back in. The rage in her is over but where is heaven now? She's floating in a white wave of silence, but she has doubts about heaven and is being drawn back. She asks God to help her hold back the desire. Then she sees God in the white wave and he's real, and breathing -- he is alive--She believes! She goes to meet Him in heaven and now she is free.
