this song is about all the death and suffering that our selfish inwards looking culture has caused, to people and animals all over the world that we never bothered to seriously consider… how we never counted the cost of all that loss… we couldn't measure it… couldnt see it or feel it, didn't try very hard…. so it wasnt real to us. we never imagined that loss could weigh… that it was real and that it would come back to us...we thought it was someone else's problem…as long as it was someone else's mother, someone else's son… in some other place… we never counted these costs as real. but now it's come full circle… and now it's we that's dying… so we begin to wonder… if loss could weigh. |

no one has mentioned the obvious sexual meaning. "last night he could not make it, he tried hard but he could not make it" I always heard it that way before i heard the title. Even though the song is obviously about an alien crash-landing, the use of blatant sexual imagery (and not in a douchey cock-rock way) is very intentional and very pixies and part of the edginess that I love about this band i.e. Frank Black sounds so much more dangerous singing about male sexual dysfunction than Robert Plant ever did yowling about his whole-lotta love. (although i like that too just in a sillier way) |
