I think this song is about two lovers going through couples therapy. Fran is deeply in love with the person he is singing this song to but apparently things aren't going so well. I get the sense that he was chafed on and they may be separated, hence the "in my darkest night I will be on my own" line. -------- Here we go Fast and slow On the big chair But we don't know Where we're going On the big chair -------- The chorus of the song seems to be referring to the love seat or couch that couples typically sit on when going through couples therapy. He knows that it's going to be an emotional roller coaster and neither of them know if it will help but they're getting ready for the ride. -------- Don't you know it's hard, quite, in the time of confusion To tell you that I love you -------- What he's saying here is that it's such an emotional time and there are so many feeling being pulled in different directions that to simply say "I love you" is very hard, especially if he was cheated on. -------- You see it could have been me instead of you It could have been me if I wanted to But it wasn't So we'll have to face the truth -------- This is why I believe Fran is singing about being cheated on. He is saying that he had opportunities to cheat if he wanted to, but didn't. He was the one that was cheated on and they have to deal with it now. |
