I think the song has a bit more meaning to it than "Her man is a playa and she's had enough." "Said I've paid my dues for all that I've done And I showed you that I love you more than once" I think Kelis has wronged her lover in the past. She has tried to change her ways and grow from it but her lover has started being disrespectful himself with the excuse that she did it first. He's tricked her by making her feel guilty for her past mistakes and convinced her he has a free pass to as he pleases. "Freedom to us has always been a trick" I get the impression they were in a relaxed, casual relationship with each other because he wanted to look elsewhere but when she did it first, or in a way he found disrespectful he took the moral high ground. She's at the point of realisation that she doesn't deserve to be made to feel terrible for wrongs she's consciously tried to right. It's a sticky situation to be in. |
