Built to Spill – Kicked It in the Sun Lyrics 11 years ago
this song seems to be broken down into segments and generally concerns the plight of the average human being coming to terms with mediocrity. he emphasizes this through place and then realisation.

Doug seems to use his own story to portray the thoughts of many. The first verse comes to terms with this in regard to your younger self, protected and oblivious to the outside world. You are completely wrapped in your own little place or bubble and nothing is considered beyond this. It's your place. You might feel this through a town you live or lived in, or likewise, a suburb. There are these little things that you know that make it your own and its there for you. "Tiny Tv's on at 3, so serene no place to be alone" is an indirect personification of Boise, that he already referenced with the street names in the line "from ada to irene".

the second verse is about coming to terms with the possibility of exiting this world. that stage where you begin to feel the pressure of the future. The repeated phrase "kicked it in the sun" to me is multi layered and what makes this track a master piece. The phrase can either be literal or metaphorical as you so perceive in regards to your own life. You can either push those memories (of the place) behind and get out of there or you can keep them with you at the center of your being. this obviously varies on whether the place produced good or bad memories. In regard to this however, I'll restate, this song is a masterpiece.

"its alright now im getting over, getting mine" is a way of establishing the realization that this world must be left behind to progress into the future.

The final segment of the song reinforces the notion that where ever you are in life, good or bad places (both physically and mentally) there is always that light (or sun) driving you through in your heart that convinces you that "you're special". this might show significant meaning to those who feel misunderstood in their life and is probably the reason why so many people praise these lyrics.

overall. fantastic piece of intelligent songwriting. didnt even mention how brilliant the instrumental transitions compliment the lyrics and mood of the song. Masterpiece.
