This is my literal interpretation of the song. Music is subjective which many of you say (and I agree makes it great) but I don’t believe this is the split personality of the same individual. Lyrically the names “Love” and “Hate” are capitalized as if their names. Hate: Is most likely the male. He is portrayed masculine and reckless and most men can be conceived. “Hate gets home lucky to still be alive, He screams over the sidewalk and into the drive” (He) Love: is most likely the female, “patient and kind”, the cab driver shows regret as to not having the courage to talk to her. “He say Love I’m sorry, she says ‘what for?” (She) “her pretty eyes” “she flies” “She comes down” Love has been gone a while, long distance relationships are hard on both sides, seems in this song Hate himself is struggling with the distance and the unknown. Hate turns to alcohol and wondering, probably contemplating what life and the relationship has in store for him. This song covers the last couple ours of their lives before theyre finally reunited. Love returning from her distant and timely trip. She arrives home to find it empty with no sign of her man (Hate). When he finally arrives, Hate must be feeling regretful for arriving home intoxicated and late. Love being Love, forgives him without question. |

| Nightlark , i agree and appriciate your insight . Very thorough . And like you , i still get chills every time i listen to this emotionally charged song. I've always understood "the element of danger" to be the literal incident that ends his life. The rest of the song is the foreshadowing to the last few verses. Spot on. If you go on YouTube and watch his live set of the song in the small showing room , he has a fantastic duet where he adds dramatic pauses , tempo changes, and just raw emotion . Give it a listen and tell me what you think. | |
