This is one of my favorite songs by opeth. I find the lyrics easy to follow. The narrator has a friend/lover that has fallen into a depression or extreme sadness. The void/wildeness is a metaphor for that. The narrator follows the friend in an attempt to bring them back. He doesn't realize that the friend is too far gone to come back from this place. The lyrics "you are beyond all help, dancing into the void" perfectly illustrates the friends descent into darkness forever. That phrase is a metaphor for death. But the narrator is still trying to pull the friend out not realizing that the attempt is futile. Which is the last phrase of the song "we're almost there". In the end the narrator is dragged into the same darkness with his friend never to return. |

To me this song has a simple meaning. It has been a long time coming since the events in When, he has tried desperately to contact her. He wanted to show his love and affection for her and that shows in Madrigal and The Amen Corner, but to no avail as all she sees is faint mist and terror. I think this song is the ghost's come to Jesus moment, the part of his journey along with credence when he realizes he will never be with her again. She is trying to move on with her life. He will eventually come to his senses in the song Credence, but his initial reaction is one of anger and hate. He tries for one last time to make her understand he is still there for her. At the end of this song he realizes he has gone about this the wrong way and comes to accept that he has driven her away. This leads us to what IMO is the most critical portion of the story (Credence and Karma). His realization that he must let her go forever. That is the only way he can show her he loves her. Whether he was successful at allowing her to move on is up for debate... Epilogue tells you that. |
