| The Weakerthans – Psalm For The Elks Lodge Last Call Lyrics

"Let the toast to absent members push through the ceiling, before we say goodnight."
The absent members aren't just away from the club, they're away from life (the toast "pushes through the ceiling" towards heaven). Samson--great writer that he is--connects the dying (one of the themes of the album), the passing of Canadian traditions, and the living members' hope that this won't be the last goodnight into a short and poignant line. |

| Pernice Brothers – Amazing Glow Lyrics

This is actually my wife's favorite song by Pernice--she's taken it from the other direction, as she left an abusive ex to start a better life with someone else (me of course!) and with no regrets. True story: when we heard him play it in concert, he was looking at her the whole time. I think he knew she thought the song was about someone like her! |

| Teenage Fanclub – I Don't Want Control of You Lyrics

The meaning of this song is so obvious...except it isn't. When Norman Blake wrote it, he said it was about his then-wife. But these days when he plays it in concerts he says it's about his daughter, who was born around the time of the song. So apparently all of us were wrong then--or Norman's wisely decided to honor someone who's still in his life. |
