I'm an aspiring screenwriting and music is a huge muse for me. I get a lot of my inspiration from stringing together the stories in songs and bringing a literal and live light to them. I spend a lot of time analyzing lyrics and thought to share my ideas.

This song is so emotionally beautiful, the first time I heard it I couldn't get it out of my head. I think the meaning its almost too obvious, it's basically a suicide note. Like I feel he's debating or thinking about the act of killing himself and thinking, if I'm gone, what will the world be? And he goes and lists his relationships and his feelings and how he wants them to cope almost but it all ends with, they won't even know I'm gone. So it's his realizations and his list of things he has to ponder before he can follow through with what he's thinking of doing. But I think what happens is clear because the repetition of they/she/he/you won't even know I'm gone is your answer. Despite it all, me not being here won't have a true barring on their lives. It's a heartbreaking song but it's also really beautiful in a tragically sad kinda way. Like I love this song even though it makes me feel really hurt for the muse it follows and honestly I cry listening to it. But I think it's a realization before suicide or if that's not correct then the muse is literally just leaving home or something and saying the same things with a little less emotional meaning problem. Though it was the tone of the singer's voice and the music that made me more keen on my first interpretation being the more relevant idea. |

| I think the meaning of the gun, is their heart. Give my gun away when it's loaded. I can't give my heart to this other person when it's full and occupied by you. But if you don't shoot it, how my supposed to hold it. Meaning that if you feel the same or you can't understand what I feel for you, then how can I live with my heart full of you and not have you? They're asking each other or more so even themselves, I love you but we're not committed so is it okay, does that justify the fact that I'm committing this crime of cheating and giving myself away to someone else when in reality I'm stuck and in love with you? You can kinda tell from both verses that they're not these people, the kind of people that cheat and they're referring to themselves as trash because they know what they're doing it wrong. It's almost as if it's an attention cry, like maybe you'll notice me if I give myself to someone else, if I commit this sin. And then the last line, no. The reality is that it's not okay because they both know that deep deep down, they're in love with each other they're just stubborn idiots and can't figure it out so they cheat and try to justify it and blame things and yeah. It's a confusion of feelings on both parts but it's an extremely emotional and beautiful song and one of my favorites. If you don't cry listening to it, you're like missing the point of how raw and important it is. This song is beyond words, it's lovely. | |

I have to say that if you're wondering about this song, watch the music video. Never in my life have I seen a music video that is this accurate and beautifully made to say the least. It gets the song down to perfection. I think this song is about infatuated lovers overcome by the lust, the drugs, the thrill, the danger, and the flawed lens that they see each other through. She is this beautiful girl and he's this drug obsessed boy who's probably going to corrupt whatever ounce of innocence she has left. He's almost obsessed with her in a way, she's beautiful how could you ever want to leave her, and her infatuation with him only means she's not going anywhere. To give a more literal meaning of her balaclava is starting to chafe. A balaclava is one of those wool ski masks or in this case the mask a robber would wear to cover up his identity since it only has holes for the mouth and eyes. Chafe means to wear down, meaning her mask is wearing from all the use. Often times I found that Matty's lyrics can be as literal as it gets. This song is quite possibly as simple as two lovers that are also well, robbers. And I know it's considered a love story because he's said it point blank. The next part, one more time, one more fight, one more line, will I know you. One more time, maybe it's their last time engaging in the act of 'robbing', one more fight I think literally means one more fight. I take it this couple fights a lot, whether it be the drugs, their lifestyle which has ever ounce of danger following it or a simple verbal fight. One more line, cocaine. From other 1975 songs, cocaine is a constant repeating topic and a line refers to that. I take that as the meaning here also because from the video there's frequent drug use that backs that. Will I know you, well will he know her? Will she know him? Will they?? Its out loud thinking, one more of this, then will we understand? That's actually a little cloudy for me. For the next part, in the video he's playing with a gun and she gets upset over it. I almost take it as he's making a joke of this with her. If you never shoot you never know, if you never eat you never grow. Those aren't comparable things really, he's taking the situation too lightly and I think that's part of the infatuated lovers idea, he's a mess, crazy almost but she's so tied to him that she'll be forgiving even when he sticks a gun to her face as a joke. The pretty kinda dirty face, she's wearing down, either by this words, their actions, whatever it is she's slowly melting away from herself and falling for everything she does. The stay part, this is simple. In the first few lines he was begging her, he wanted her because she was beautiful and she caught his eye as this girl he could play around with. But now, she's begging him to stay. She fell for him, he almost ruined her. He's got her robbing whatever you wanna say, stores, banks, so be it. He's got her hooked on drugs. The video has him putting drugs into her mouth, it also has her doing a line of cocaine by herself among others. He was begging, and now she's begging. That's as simple as it gets, they're glued to each other basically. Then it repeats the one more time, fight, line but the last line changes. Be a riot, cause I know you. Basically, I can't say for certain if it's talking about her or him or both even but it's gotten to the point in their relationship where it doesn't matter how crazy they act or what they do or who they hurt or what drugs they're doing because they know each other, they know what to expect at this point that it's no longer an act of doing but an act of knowing. They both know, we're doing this. We're robbing this store and there's no backing out or being scared because we're crazy and we're doing it. They fully understand each other and they're now fully committed to their choices. This part of the video is very intimate, they're kissing and you see that they love each other. Toxic lovers. This next part, in the video they're standing there in front of a store that well they're going to rob. Their friends, or the rest of the band, is waiting in a van for them. They have a plan. The video doesn't go along with this next part exactly but it's easy to understand just by the lyrics. The police have come, so their plan is complicated. I'll shoot him if that's what you ask, meaning if you want me to do this I will, showing their connection to each other and their willingness to do whatever it takes for each other and for their safety. But if you just take off your mask you'll find out everything's gone wrong. I love that line, for many reasons. But meaning to the song, there's a couple. If you take off your mask, surrender really you'll find yourself in a bigger mess. Or if you stop if you back out it's going to be worse. Something complicated their plan and showing who they are and succumbing to their failure of the task won't make it better. For the end, I'll give the lyric and the video interpretation. For the lyrics, everybody's dead, meaning they killed the people in the place they robbed. But remember the police are there, meaning our infatuated lovers have been caught. I take it as they're put in the back seat of the cop car, they're driving through the town they pass his old school. He's got his suit on, that's the cops uniform and I see her standing there watching him, or sitting next to him. Either works because I see it two ways. He was taken into the cop car and she was left standing meaning that he was charged for the crime. But if she's next to him, then they both were. So the last line, which should be, you look so cool, it's her being in the completely flawed mindset that she's created, thinking the police taking him away is cool. He looks cool to her, basically her flawed mentality makes her think he looks like a badass being taken away by the police which is sick minded to think about when you're in the real world but she's not in the right mindset at the moment. The part of her that's obsessed with him and their lifestyle, that makes this cool to her. It's cool for the simple reason that she's saying babe you're a badass, we did this and I know you're being taken away but I love you and I love the thrill and yeah I think you get it. Now for the video, before the now everybody's dead part, which to go on a tangent and say that the way Matty sings the line, Now everybody's dead, just gives off the pure emotion of the song and it makes it raw and important. But back to the video. Before that line there's a pause and the video goes silent as they run into the store, then you hear shots. Second later the song picks up and he screams, now everybody's dead and the two run out of the store, no police are seen, but Matty is shot. They then get into the van and drive away. I think the way the lyrics go here, it could mean that they were successful in their plan except for the he being shot part of course, no one wants that. But they're driving past my old school, okay you could say they're driving past as they get away in the van being driven by their friends but I think the lyrics lose a little bit of accuracy here for the video. Then you see flashes of Matty with his gunshot wound, they're kissing, patching it up, and at the end they're at a diner I think you see him read this note that she passed to him and it says you look so cool, another reason for why those are the lyrics. But something about the video is cool if you notice it, Matty has a bandage over where his wound would be during parts of the video meaning that it's being done in flashes. So that's an interesting thing to pick up on and it tells you that the video isn't in accurate time order at points. Anyways, I hope this cleared things up for some people. I think this song is more literal then some see it but I truly think it's actually about robbers, its as simple as the title. Sometimes its best not to look into stuff so much because the answers are right there. But this song for sure has the potential to be taken other routes which I saw reading other comments and I agree with elements that other people brought up. At the end of the day, this is a love song according to the genius that is Matthew Healy. It's a toxic love story about fucked up, drug addicted lovers that are completely and utterly infatuated by each other to the point where robbing a store is okay and considered cool. It's tragically beautiful and an amazing song and if you haven't yet seen the video I urge you to watch it because I think it's one of the best music videos I ever seen and helps with clarity about the lyric meaning. In all honesty, I think this song could easily be about a girl who's attempting suicide. Now I hate to be the morbid one here but parts of the song suggest it, even though I do see the lines that point to someone dying for other reasons lets say or even cheating. Anyways, if you have the time to read this essay, please do because I spent a lot of timing coming up with it. Here we go. So, when he says, she seemed much happier then. She's lying in bed with her eyes closed, possibly asleep or just at a relaxing point. If she was suicidal it's possible she'd appear more peaceful when the outside world was tuned out and especially if she was near the point of actually attempting, it'd almost make sense for her to appear at ease if this is what she wanted. It's also suggest she was looking anything but happy lately and if the person telling the story, obviously the singer, was romantically involved with her which is how I take it, he'd maybe have been able to catch on to her apparent sadness. The next part, I was there for a reason. He finally saw what was going on, he literally said my oh my, like he's coming to the realization. And then of course, why oh why. So he's almost saying holy shit how did I not put it together. Then his mind goes to the why would she do this, she's got so much good and whatever else I think you get that point. So in this part he's thinking to himself I knew I came here for something and it was because I needed to either see this and understand or possibly save her. Can we talk this through, make things right? I see him sitting down next to her and being like lets talk about it, it doesn't have to be this way, let me help you sorta thing. And he'd sure as hell like to try. Obviously he's feeling guilt maybe or just he really cares about her and he wants to do whatever he can to reverse it, to make her not want to take this route. Sure as hell seems pretty powerful in a sense, I think it implies that he really means what he's saying. The next part where she's opening her eyes, and asks how long he's been there and he's just staring there with wide eyes. Two possible things here. Either what I said above it kinda like an internal thing, he could think she's already dead and he's going through that, I can fix it, why is she doing this, how could I not see she was unhappy, all those feelings, and now she's opening her eyes and he's like okay you're alive still, and he's in shock because he still knows what her plan is. Or, he's literally just in awe at the way she sounds. I take it she's pretty uninterested at this point, almost cold sounding because in her mind she knows what she wants and this boy coming in here, no matter their relation, isn't going to change her mind. If she's set, she's set. And there's her also saying she didn't think he cared. Either, he made it appear that way and they didn't have the best relationship, also goes along with the guilt he could possibly be feeling. Or she shut herself off so much and had this suicide thought in her head for so long that she was emotionally unavailable and depressed that to her, no one did care. Then the whole next part really gets me. I can see this really vividly even, she could be pouring out her last bit of words to him and either she's angry or upset or both even. Her words seem really emotional to me. There's nothing else you can do, meaning she's already made up her mind and anything he says won't change that. You dont understand what I go through, simple really she's saying he doesn't get it, he doesn't know what its like inside her head he can't possible be able to rationalize what she feels so he can't help her. If the world has changed then I'll be dammed, I think that's almost like well if it changes then oh freaken well because it wasn't working for me. I'll be dammed, she's almost surprised as the saying would go so it could mean she'd be shocked if things actually had the possibility to turn around for her. Then the last little part of her lets call it a speech, that's what really drove me to this whole suicide meaning. Oh, 'cause I'm no good at being brave Not even on the better days And there are things we cannot save No matter how hard we try It's really to the point and straight forward for me here. She admits that she's not strong enough to deal with it or handle her life for whatever her reasons or hardships are, she can't do it. Even on the days when she's happy its not enough. From experience, you can be depressed or upset or sad or lonely but you have good days and for her those better days aren't cutting it or they're less frequent. And the last lines, I feel like its her telling him that he cant save her, some things aren't able to be saved. She's convinced herself that this is the only way and no matter what he says or what he tries, she's not savable. I see him just hearing her and then getting choked up at the end. He gets what she's saying and I think there's a part of him that can't accept it but he almost knows her doesn't have a choice. I think he's emotional at this point, touching her with her trembling hand. Like I said before I think this song is so emotional and it's possible they'd both be crying at this point for their respective reasons. And then he couldn't say goodbye, he refused at the end to be okay with this no matter how hard he tries to understand her. I think he gets it, but he can't be okay with it. But that's how the song ends and if I had to make my visual ending, I think he'd either just sit there and be with her because he can't do anything so maybe being with her doesn't mean he's saying goodbye until she's really gone. Or he took more drastic measures and called for help, depending on how strong his refusal of acceptance is. Sooooo, if you read this whole thing you're my favorite. I'm a very visual person, I see this song being playing out so clearly in my head it's almost weird. But it took me a while to settle on a meaning for this song and based on the lyrics, what I see, and even the tone of the singer's voice throughout it, I just get this conclusion every time I listen to it. I really really love this song, I think its extremely emotional and heartbreaking even. But my interpretation of the meaning is that it's an encounter between a boy who has some sort of strong relationship, my top being either best friend/brother or romanic, and a girl who is in the mist of committing suicide. Not saying it's correct, but that's how I see it. Hope my opinion helped! |
