I've always felt this song is an expression of non dualism--the abstract idea of a state of pure undifferentiated oneness. The bar and the kiss are just symbols because what else do we have? I don't think he's being sarcastic or critical. I would also point to other songs : The Gates of Paradise, for example, that suggest the same theme. |

May I suggest an additional meaning: As I posted about Brokendown Palace, Ripple is about enlightenment, or the path to it...it has to be one one follows alone, that place beyond words or time--not that it's a lonely experience, but that it's so deeply personal and universal it cannot be spoken--hence the paradox all over the beautiful lyrics. |

Long time Dead Head, so I knew the song before I watched the movie and I gotta say--what a beautifully placed use of it. Indeed. |

You know, I realize that on the level of "form" it's a song about death, but like so many of the most beautiful of the Dead's songs, it's also about spirit--about "leaving" the brokedown palace of the world, of the body, of limits. Like Terrapin, Ripple, Franklin's....They point to something universal and so achingly beautiful, something deep down, deep, deep down, we all know. |

Great explanation. This is a transcendent piece of music. It's very beautiful, what you say, that everyone will get their in their own time, in their own way. Yes, indeed! Thank you! "A rare and different tune!" |
