Personally, I believe that this song is a brilliant polysemy written for his two most cherished. It embodies both Kevin and Nina's joint affirmation of the birth of their daughter Alabee; hence the title, "So Begins our Alabee". He is writing from their collective perspective of suddenly becoming parents; A long, cooperative, blissful, turbulent, eternal and priceless Odyssey- a long wandering or voyage usually marked by many changes of fortune; an intellectual or spiritual wandering or quest. "And so begins our odyssey, And we begin our odyssey." "The Aria is bleeding and the boyish voice is leaving" Aria- a meaningful, melodic musical piece most of the time performed vocally and sometimes accompanied instrumentally. Castrato- a male singer castrated in boyhood so as to retain a soprano or alto voice/ category of classical male singing equivalent to that of soprano. - Here Kevin is expressing fear of potentially losing self expression, now that part of himself has been transcribed into his child. He makes a reference to the arias of the late seventeenth century french and italian operas, where during this time Castrato was extremely popular. By declaring that his boyish voice is leaving, he is stating that either- a) He castrated himself in order to become popular (read his essay Selling Out Isn't Possible) or- b) someone else (ironically, Nina perhaps) castrated him so that he could surmount himself over and over and over again and sing like the sexy little boy he knows he is- or at this point in time, was-because know he has to grow up and face the reality of being a responsible declared progenitor: Father. "Ive been an evil tenor, WHOA OH OH, I've filled the innocents does eyes with glue" -He's been an immoral and bad and selfish and illicit person up to this point, and he is coming down from that mental state to walk with Nina hand in hand by offering determination amalgamated with longevity. However, the doe of which he has heretofore copulated with is hesitant to accept his quivering hand due to the fact that she has had her vision impaired by the quavering and faltering soprano. He is repentant because "You're my only softness you're my only pleasure it's true, And I never want to be your little friend the abject failure." He understands within himself that together, mutually, Nina and Alabee combine to allow him his only sense of joy, and he never wants to become, in their eyes, an abject failure. He also states this worry in the song, "Miss Blonde Your Papa is Failing". "The chrysalis is breaking and the super ego's waking" -He is evolving away from his callous vessels and becoming meta-human; discovering the virtuous super ego. He has transitioned into fatherhood. "I've been a gloomy Petrarch with a quill as weepy as Dido" - Kevin is and will always have a lugubrious affinity with the Italian Poet named Petrarch of whom was and is to this day extremely popular for his dismal and unrequited love poems of the fourteenth century renaissance. Apropos the weepy quill of Dido. -http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/162483/Dido "You're my mousy aesthete you're my buoyant cherub it's true And I never want to be your little friend the abject failure" I don't really have an explanation for Nina being described as a mousy person who is not a dilettante. Mousy is defined as- (of a person) nervous, shy, or timid; lacking in presence or charisma. Kevin, it's 12:47 AM. I have class at 8. I have no ambition except when it comes to dissecting your life through your publicized art. I'm not going to let the "lost time" get to my head. I won't let the clock win. I just wish that I could sit down with you and discuss nothing important. I just envy all of your friends and even you because it's like you have some celestial and rare gift. But I love you so much more. |
