It seems to me to be an obvious reference to young love, teenagers to young/naïve to recognize the meaning & profound impact of sex, and the consequences of their decisions both on their relationship and on the young lady's perception of her self. "Could you whisper in my ear The things you wanna feel I'd give you anythin' To feel it comin'" Young passion, he wants to please her and feel the release of sexual pleasure. "Don't you love the life you killed? The priest is on the phone Your father hit the wall Your ma disowned you" This is about the emotional & relational consequences of the abortion from the people who tried to influence & shape the young woman. She HAD an abortion based on the lyric..."you killed"-past tense, it already happened. The people closest to her (besides father of the baby) are asking her, "don't you love the life you killed?", as in "don't you feel any connection to the baby who grew inside of you?" and "don't you feel any remorse for the decision to kill your own child?" Her parents can't understand how the daughter they raised was able to go against their values...her dad is irrate, her mom is so disappointed in the daughter's actions that their relationship ceases due to the emotion wall built between them (not literally disowning her). The priest calls because the Catholic church strongly believes in the sanctity of human life...maybe he is encouraging her to confess/repent/receive her penance for her sin. "Don't supposed I'll ever know What it means to be a man It's somethin' I can't change I'll live around it" Maybe the girl's father to the boyfriend that a real man would have stepped up & been a father & supported the young lady in this situation instead of encouraging an abortion. It is something he can't change...the abortion happened and it's over, there is never a chance to undo it. He says he'll live around it...he wants to forget about it, move on, not dwell on it, just LET IT SLIDE...let it go & move on. The girl is much more profoundly affected. He wants to fill the hole left inside of her by this decision & the loss of key relationships in her life. He wants to make her complete again cause their relationship changed, her perception of herself changed because of the abortion. He wants he back the way she was, he wants to support her by marrying her but it's too late. He just wants her to let her guilt go ("slide") but she can't. He tries to make her feel better by saying she wasn't promiscuous (Yeah, slide between the sheets of all them beds you never knew) or maybe she becomes promiscuous looking to escape her past (?)---not sure on this one. "I wanna wake up where you are I won't say anything at all So why don't you slide Ooh, slide" He is saying he wants things to go back to the way they were before the baby, he won't bring up the abortion at all, so why doesn't she just let it go, move on and let it slide like he is. "why don't you slide into my room"---he wants the sex/relationship to go back to how it was but it has changed & never will. |
