| The first half of this song is a general description of existential malaise and the human condition ("why didn't they tell me it was going to be like this the day I was born") and not knowing what one wants in/out of life. The second half is largely about the phoniness of capitalism and the inability to find hope and meaning in the products we are sold. Guthrie's music, more than anything, inspired hope for millions of Americans. | |
