My boyfriend showed me this song before I left for college. It made me cry because we were breaking up but I knew he still wanted the very best for me. The part "long may your innocence reign" gets me everytime. So beautiful. |

I think the man in this song is cheating. The "breathing down my neck" part is about lust. He asks the girl what could she possibly expect in this condition. What does she think will happen? He is already with someone. Then the rest of the song is about surrendering. Surrendering to the "dark blue" which is a symbol for the depths of their love. He connects with this girl and how she also feels "alone in a crowded room". The cheating is so sad and all consuming, but kind of beautiful too. |

I can't decide if this song is uplifting or horribly depressing. The lyrics would suggest that it is happy. Being someone's Dead Sea means you are special and can lift others up. However, the way it is sung with such an aching tone leads me to believe there is a pain underneath it all. Maybe the singer was hurting himself by trying to lift others all the time. I don't know what the true meaning is. Just my two cents |

| Benjamin Francis Leftwich – Atlas Hands Lyrics

My favorite part of this song is, "People in the churches started singing above their hands
They say, "My God is a good God and He cares" Soo beautiful. We all have different ways of coping with life and come to believe in different things. While some choose to believe in a personal God, the speaker in this song believes in an Atlas. He believes he can things into his own hands and makes a plan. Beautiful |

| Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain Lyrics

I had always interpreted this as a song to a mother who had passed on. The son is grown up and now telling his mother not to worry about him. I think it is such a wishful song because the son wishes someone was still there to worry about the little things.
He sings, "Mother don't worry I killed the last snake that lived in the creek bed. Mother don't worry I've got some money I've saved for the weekend. Mother remember being so stern with that girl who was with me?"
We all need someone to care for us. The speaker seems to wish he could be young and have someone care if he has enough money and is dating the right girls. Later he sings, "mother don't worry I've got a coat and some friends on the corner. Mother don't worry she's got a garden we're planting together." Again this reinforces the idea he wishes his mother was there to remind him to wear a coat and make good friends. He also wants his mom to know his relationship is growing with said girl.
But he knows his mother is not around and regretfully informs her, "sons are like birds flying upward over the mountain." I think he comes to term with the fact he is motherless and on his own. |

| Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah Lyrics

Hallelujah can be a joyful expression of praise to the Lord. But I feel like in this song it means so much more. Hallelujah is a cry of exasperation. It is a cry of relief. Its a cry of climax. It's a cry of gut wrenching sorrow. It a cry of tasting heaven, but being mortal and sinning over and over again. Sometimes Hallelujah is the only word we have for all the things we can't say or truly understand. |

I think the speaker can't handle the emotions in their life. Fire could mean anger, jealousy, revenge, lust etc. They are pleading for someone to chase the fire away. Take away their strong emotions so they don't have to deal with them. Then they can just sleep all day or in other words have no worries again. |

This song is so freaking beautiful. I love that it is titled Amongster. I feel like the song is about being amongst love and hate and chaos and lust. It is about being in the middle of so many emotions and almost not knowing how to process it all. |

| Bat for Lashes – Siren Song Lyrics

I think this song is about sacrifice. The speaker believes she could give up her dark side and be all her lover wants "and more and more." But that level of sacrifice is destructive. If you give all of yourself up what do you have left? I think this scares the speaker and she realizes there will always be a siren song (her dark side) calling to her. Towards the end of the song we feel her accepting that she can't be what her lover wants. She exclaims "cause I'm evil..." |

I think this song is about giving yourself time not to be okay. Time to be hurt. Time to realize you only eat to fill yourself up and you only sleep to rest. You don't find joy in things anymore. But it's okay not to be okay sometimes |
