Josh Garrels – Don't Wait For Me Lyrics 11 years ago
This seems like one of Garrels' more personal songs. As a teenager he was a bit of a party animal before he converted in college. "Even when I was on these crazy acid trips, I had this weird sense that the Spirit of God was with me, saying, 'You're God's child. You're destined for something.' " - JG

The first stanza seems like it's talking about his conversion, when he stopped his rebellious lifestyle and "walked away from the life he was leading with his friends" in order to follow "the road of his king" (Jesus).

The other stanzas seem like references to scripture. Chasing fools gold is a great metaphor for pleasure seeking, how drugs and other vices may satisfy your deep desires for a moment, but they will never fulfill. They provide a fake happiness, as fool's gold is a deceitfully attractive but fake version of gold. He also talks about how he dreamed of a free (John 8:32), joyful (John 15:11) and beautiful life as a child (Luke 18:17), and by losing his life he finds the one he has always yearned for (Matthew 10:39).

The last stanza I think is a reference to Luke 9:62. Once you decide to follow "the king" you can't turn around because being against him would be preferable to being lukewarm (Revelation 3:16).

This song is packed with Scripture and at face value you can't really tell. That's the real genius of Garrels I think. He's not in your face about his faith, but man do his lyrics pack a punch.
