This song hits very close to home for me. My boyfriend lives with a father who gets drunk and goes for him and his family. It's horrible to see him being hurt, having to see him be close to tears, refusing to go home, having to see marks on his skin and knowing there is nothing you can do about it. That he'll have to go back there and be hurt again and you're helpless. I believe this song is about someone in love with a person dealing with abuse, depression/suicide, eating disorder, maybe a physical illness. Basically, loving someone going through something is gut wrenchingly painful.
