| Hot Hot Heat – You Owe Me An I.O.U. Lyrics | 10 years ago |

After reading the comments and the lyrics, I think that the song is about a guy and a girl in a relationship who, like Brian said, each act in their own destructive ways. He takes things for granted, even though he has very little. (her, apparently) He also doesn't just hand out compliments. He thinks that "they're cheaper told in bulk". Which means that if you give out too many compliments, then they start to mean less. They don't have as much value to them. He won't change his ways but takes their relationship for granted or feels that she isn't doing enough so she owes him. Meanwhile, she has to keep reapplying make-up that's been ruined by "crocodile tears". Crocodile tears is a phrase used to describe when someone is crying over something petty or just for attention. Most of the time, it's to describe a child who is crying over nothing but wants sympathy. She is most likely crying for attention and compliments from him. She's openly individual and covertly traditional. Probably meaning that she just wants to be different than everyone else. She wants to appear like an individual but is secretly doing what everyone else does. She won't change her ways but feels like he owes her compliments and that *he* isn't doing enough so he owes her. "Don't think that I'll forget. I know what I should get this time." confuses me a bit. But I think that it could mean that when they argue and one of them does something wrong, they both just brush it off and say that they owe their significant other an IOU. Usually with an IOU, the person can redeem it at any time: to win the next argument or any sort of favor. But I don't know what they "should get this time"? At the end, they both take their relationship for granted but I like to think it works for them (which is why the song is so happy sounding). Their dysfunctional relationship somehow works for them. They both never change but they find a way (the IOUs) to work past their problems. I honestly adore this song. Hot hot heat has such a neat 90's-garage-band sound. Makes you feel like you might be in high school again. I used to sing it to my ex but I don't think he ever got the full meaning and why I adore the song so much. |

I think that this song is about when you're in a bad place in your life. You're depressed or you're going through a tough time. "If your days are now just something you must bear." And the singer is saying that maybe we're alike (everyone is going through a tough time.) Everyone is constantly having a problem. Maybe something is changing (as life does) and you don't like it. And maybe it's on your mind a lot. But listen up, because it gets better! Tomorrow you might wake up nice and clean and it might turn and wind up just the way we dreamed! So this change in your life, this problem, may be a blessing in disguise! Overall, I think this song just gives you a feeling of "together-ness". Everyone is going through a problem or a change and we can either get bogged down by it or make the best of it. And, since I first heard this song through Perks of Being a Wallflower trailer, I must mention it. I feel like it's a group of people together. They're all going through their problems, they're all trying to make the best of what they've got. And I feel like they're all lifting each other up. Trying to make everyone else feel better by recognizing that, yes, your head is an empty box and your heart has become spare parts... but we're on our way. We're on our way to be with you. We might not be able to fix it (that comes with time and thought and courage) but we'll be there through it with you. :) |
