This song seems to be about suicide. The narrative remains the same, but the cause of death is suicide, judging from the line "we suffer for as long as we can take". Suicide is sometimes considered an escape. "This marks a vulnerable part of me/ guess it runs in my family" There's evidence depression and suicidal behavior is heritable. The Lyme disease angle doesn't fit with this line. |

| This song is a followup to "I Can Feel Your Pain". A girl ,named Anna, at a Manchester Orchestra show was suffering from bone cancer and died a week after. Andy wrote "After the Scripture" for her and performed it for Anna's folks in her grandparent's backyard. He talks about it at a solo performance in Baltimore. | |

I agree that this song is about an abortion or an unwanted pregnancy, but I think the song takes a turn in the middle of the second verse. I think it starts as a flashback to before the events/setting of the beginning of the album. I think they discovered her cancer during the period of her pregnancy resulting in an even worse situation than before "And you'll just keep my in the waiting room And all the while I'll know we're fucked And not getting unfucked soon" She's despondent and distraught when she is waiting to leave for hospice: "You sit in front of snowy television, suitcase on the floor" Amazing album |
