I both am and am not surprised no one else has commented on this song yet. I was just reading about the Vasa, a galley built under order of the Swedish king back in the mid-1600's, and it occurred to me that it is most likely what this song is about. The lines/phrases that mainly lead me to my conclusion are "oaken galley" (Vasa was built from tons of laminated oak), "For your king and country" (it was built by direct order of the Swedish king and intended to be the flagship of the Swedish fleet), "Since the maiden voyage was the last to be" (Due to a design oversight, Vasa sank on its maiden voyage as soon as it had to deal with wind/waves. The 64 cannons' portholes were too close to the waterline and so as soon as the wind tilted it in the open ocean, the water was free to rush through said portholes and flood the lower decks), and of course, " The golden flagship of the fleet" (see aforementioned 'by direct order of the Swedish king). |
