This song is a cheap, poppy, well-polished love song on the surface, but a close examination reveals a deep interior; that it is really about religion/supernatural and the way it's holding us back as a species. He acknowledges that humans have a yearning to believe in falsehoods and kind of plays on that theme as a catchy jamming tragedy. He even directly talks about gods and sings "they destroy our hope for peace, hope for love," alluding to the toxic nature of religion and supernatural belief. We hear about his Christian upbringing in interviews, and the recent documentary TPIAGA and a disdain towards the indoctrination of people by religion. He sings about this personally in the song "Christian Son" AKA Kristiansand https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiHbBvue6mE as well. It's very clear in many other song lyrics such as "Gronlandic Edit" that Kevin Barnes consistently takes a stand against his religious upbrining. He sees the absurdity in it and reveals theism for what it is; a joke, fiction. I respect him so much more as a writer when i consider this interpretation. |

Kevin Barnes actually did go to Christian school I believe. So did I, and I can easily recognize that this song is about his rejection of Christianity and all its pushers in his childhood. Pretty simple. Also the song is a reaction to the repression of emotions and maybe "free" actions that religion has a part in. Example: the line "You're not going to vanish if you step out of line". |
