Iron & Wine – An Angry Blade Lyrics 9 years ago
A song about loving someone andthe sting of not being loved back..

the lyrics "turning a shade of an angel born in a bramble ditch when the doors of heaven closed" are amazing..one of the best things about SB's early work is to paint imagery of the old south thruout his songs no matter what the story is..

Iron & Wine – The Trapeze Swinger Lyrics 9 years ago
Probably Sam Beam's best song, and just one more instance where he paints a picture of a story, in this case a retrospective of a former friend/lover, complete with allegory and metaphor. A circus theme persists throughout the song and is tied in with Biblical fatalism, giving to a memory or dreamlike quality and suggesting that love is all a just a grand spectacle to the gods, but also something deeply and intensely personal, introspective, and nostalgic to man. In this he holds his own memories to the duality of existence, the monkey and man, helpless at the hands of their own fallacy, and the Divine sublime nature of the experience that seems to transcend nature. He centers the whole idea of past love as a trapeze swinger, a wonderful, sometimes terrifying, sometimes hilarious, but always awe inspring act, played out on the stage of the universal Divine..but an act none the less that must run its course and end, be it thru dissolution or death..

I showed this song to a stranger once and he openly wept. Holy shit.

Iron & Wine – Kingdom of the Animals Lyrics 9 years ago
An amazing B-side I would skip for a year before I let it play one day to my amazement..

This song show Sam's creativity at its best..a story about a childhood friend who got physically and possibly spiritually lost and found. The imagery is BIblical, with a memory centering on a hymn sung with her by the narrator describing the Flood, and tying it into the story when referencing the physical storm during the search, the emotional storm it caused the town, the alienation of predatory animals on Noahs ark representing her defiant spirit, and throwing in passing beast characters, like the blue tick hound, the leopard, the wolf..The brushfire reminding us of the story of Moses..

LIke so many of his songs, again, Sam Beam just showing how brilliant of a writer he is, being able to tell a story poetically, and paint the picture of it lyrically with metaphorical imagery and double meanings..Amazing stuff.

Hole – Miss World Lyrics 9 years ago
One thing I always think of is the story of Linor Abargil, who was crowned miss world but broke down and sobbed on public tv because of the internal distress she had been carrying about being brutally raped in the previous months..The songs not about that, but its weird how the song kinda fits.

That said, the song is obviously about trying to maintiain an image of being ok and falling apart on the inside.

A Perfect Circle – The Nurse Who Loved Me (Failure cover) Lyrics 11 years ago
It's sarcasm and irony about being a patient in a methadone clinic/rehab/detox..

The first two lines about the rug are about being passed out on the floor on opiates.

The chorus is talking about confusing love for the drug being dispensed and the person dispensing it.
