What if the good old friend is the girl herself? Like she helped him in difficult times by being with him, they were in love, but now that its over, he looks back and sees shes so far away and doing fine, while he's crippled. People try to help him but he'd only listen to what he chooses to. He wants her back and tries to work things out but ends up even worse (mouth filled with gravel) he's left alone. "I swear ill find my way back" - this line can refer to both still having hopes of getting her back and/or letting it go and getting back to normal life with clear mind. I love how many interpretations of their songs one can come up with. |

As much as NJ are a christian band, i also interpret this song as a relationship/breakup message. Cory did an ask-me-anything on reddit once and i asked him about the lyrical content of this album, turns out he was going through a divorce during the writing process, so that influenced a lot of the lyrics. I went through a hard break-up myself and this song very accurately represents what i felt. "Carry your flags, march into that fictional cause and show off that medal. Just don't reach for that gun." It can refer to how he was mistreated by the girl after the break up. "You scaled the high horse and I felt the change. I know the difference between you and me. You cleaned the outside of your chalice but it's filled with robbery and self indulgence... just like the rest of us." Almost always one of the partners gets cocky and it really reveals all the differences between them with a lot of double-standards and hypocrisy in between. "You wear that cross like a crown. You wear that cross like a dagger. Come down from that tower." Its a desperate plea to her to come to her senses. "Nothing will be the outcome. Nothing is the outcome." By far the most hard-hitting part of the song, it implies that maybe he tried working things out and getting her back (which is the general tone of the song and the album too) but in the end it all failed and nothing was the outcome. I always felt this was the primary meaning of this song, with the christian undertones thrown in for ambiguity. Of course its still open to interpretation, and thats one of the things that defines a great band. |
