OneRepublic – Love Runs Out Lyrics 11 years ago
This is totally different from what all the other comments think of this song, but it was the first thing that struck me when I listened to it, so I'm just going to throw my opinion out there (even if this wasn't the song writer's personal meaning). xD I believe this to be about people who claim to be religious, but don't actually follow the rules of the faith.

Let me explain.

> "I'll be your light, your match, your burning sun,"

Christianity talks a lot about its followers being "light in the world" (representing the goodness of Christ in their actions), attracting people to the faith.

> "I'll be the bright, and black, that's making you run."

"Bright" and "black" are opposites -- kind of casts doubts on this whole claim of being a light. "Run" is ambiguous -- run towards, or away?

> "And we'll feel alright, and we'll feel alright,
Cause we'll work it out, yeah we'll work it out."

Their actions are about what they're getting out of them.

> "I'll be doin' this, if you ever doubt,
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out."

i.e. forever, since God's love never runs out.

>"I'll be your ghost, your game, your stadium.
I'll be your fifty thousand clapping like one"

These all have the same idea of following/supporting (God perhaps?) but then it goes back to the "feel alright" -- where it's all about the narrator.

> "I got my mind made up and I can't let go.
I'm killing every second 'til it sees my soul."

He believes that acting this way will get him into heaven but instead of actually practising the faith he's just killing time.

> "There's a maniac out in front of me."

Led by a crazy notion, no real direction.

> “Got an angel on my shoulder, and Mephistopheles.”
Mephistopheles is a demon commanded by Satan to collect the souls of those already damned – this person is pretending to be religious (the angel) but it’s false and he’ll go to hell anyway (the demon).
>”My momma raised me good, momma raised me right.
Momma said "do what you want, say prayers at night",
And I'm saying them, cause I'm so devout.”

This screams that his religious front is false. “Do what you want”, don’t stick to the rules of the faith but “say prayers at night” pretend you are.

>” Ooh, we all want the same thing.
Ooh, we all run for something.
Oh for God, for fate,
For love, for hate,
For gold, and rust,
For diamonds, and dust.”

The narrator wants to go to heaven, that’s what he’s “running for”. The comparisons between a precious thing and nothing could represent his faith e.g. he wants “diamond” but he’s gonna get “dust” because his faith isn’t real.
It's a long shot but it seems to make more sense than the song being about a woman, and Ryan (songwriter) does come from a religious background. If it is about a woman, it's a bit weird and stalker-ish. xD
