This song always paints me a picture of a father trying to write a eulogy for his little daughter, he is in a stage of grief when he's accepting the fact that she died and brings back some long buried memories 'The scratching of a mellotron it always seemed to make her cry' It's weird when a grown woman cries to a mellotron, but you can get away with it if you're a little girl ;) 'Well maybe she remembers us, collecting space up in the sky' - I've read an interview with Steven, and he explains his made-up term 'collecting space' as a process of making memories, collecting experiences, learning to live (sort of) - 'space' being whatever you come across in your life. So this line starts with a religious wish that the dead girl is currently enjoying some sort of an afterlife, where she remembers her parents and their life together, OR she collects some new kind of space up in sky, and 'sky' being the metaphorical (or, quite literal) heaven 'I whispered something in her ear I bear my soul but she don't hear' - This is kind of self explainatory in this context Don't look at me with your mother's eyes or your killer smile - if that line is correct, brings a new layer of creepy to my interpretation ;) but it just doesn't work for me, too many words and definitely too many syllables |

| I am quite sure 'russia on ice' means vodka, and anyone who tried drinking vodka on ice understands how it can 'burn a hole' - literally ;) on a more serious note though: the song is like a confession of an alcoholic, who only partially understands how destructive his/her habit is for him AND everyone around him. It's hard to care for someone with a drinking problem, because the drinking always comes first. And that's what I think the 'but russia on ice is burning a hole' line means - not being able to stop even when you know you should, because the need to drink is so strong - leaves you powerless, also the burning feeling of cold vodka in your throat becomes a guilty pleasure that you kind of look forward to | |
