This is one of those songs, that means something so different and so powerful for each person... But at the same time, it means the same for all of us. I think this whole song is about finding where we fit in this world, imagining what we want our lives to be like, wondering whats going to happen. Going in and out of our silence, our souls, constantly searching ourselves for who or what we are. Not a lot of people are happy with their lives in hindsight, no matter the difference in lives we've had. The song is asking you, Would you rather go on living what is expected of you or continuing the life that makes you unhappy (unwillingly) or saying fuck that and not get swallowed up by this shadow. You're heart is full of dreams and what you want to accomplish, but its spilling over because the world keeps knocking you down, crushing those dreams. And then in the end.. The girl in this story gets swallowed up by the world and calls to a friend for help but that friend shares the same fate This song is about death, but not dying. It is the death of lives not being lived. And life is different for everyone. So dont get lost, understand yourself and what you want and go for it. |

I think this song is about a mother and her kids and a funeral. "My mother said that i would get in trouble" the kids are at a funeral and acting out "Father wont come home because he is seeing double" is either because he has turned to drinking to numb this death, or because he has died from drinking but the mother doesn't have the heart to tell these kids "Out in the endless green, your eyes are so misleading" the endless green is the cemetery, and her eyes are misleading because she's telling the kids that its okay, that its nothing to be sad about but she is obviously crying which is "misleading" to the kids. Why would she be crying when she's telling us everything is okay. "Thats when the car pulls up..." The hearse that is carrying the body "And in a while, you start a smile The earth is wild, we've got no time" is her starting to celebrate his life, to be happy that she could be a part of his life and that he was a part of hers. She realizes that the earth is wild, things are always happening and we have no control over it, so we have to do as much as we can in the short time that we have here. We need to live it as much as possible. "Wild in our ways, what we are making" is i think how all of us youth want to live, by making our lives wild in our own way, to what we deem to be the fullest. "heartless to say go on pretending" Is how it would be heartless for the mother to tell the kids go on pretending, and not warn the kids about all of the bad that is in this world and how to deal with it "One chance to fall behind the lines that will not let you" is about how the mother has the chance to fall back to being wild in her own way, to go on pretending and live her life happily. To go past these lines which i think are all the bad experiences that are reminding her the world is harsh and wild and that are keeping her from living the way she used to, the way these kids live "Can i believe in how the past is what will catch you" is reinforcing how that its the past, its her experiences that are catching her and stopping her from falling back into living life the way she wants to live, to go on pretending And then the song repeats, but it changes from "heartless to say go on pretending" to "heartless to say, we go on pretending" "wild in our ways, go on pretending" and i think this shows the progress of life and the mindsets... At first its the parents telling us to stop pretending, and then its us telling ourselves that we cant go on pretending, but as we get older, we realize what this mother realized, that we need to go back to being a kid, to being wild in our own ways and go on pretending All in all, i think this song is about finding a balance between adults and youth. Adults always focus on the bad in this world and the harsh realities of life, but the kids only focus on the good in the world and pretending that everything's perfect. Its about how the kids need to learn from the parents, just as much as the parents need to learn from the kids. To worry less and live free, and for the kids to be more aware and learn how to take on the shitty aspects of this earth. Only then, when you can balance the two, you're life will be what you want it to be. Go on pretending |
